Data Gap between High School graduate knowledge and college-ready knowledge 1 in 5 jobs in the Metro are in healthcare or related field Much of healthcare workforce comes from outside of Mpls into the city No official Program of Study for Health Sciences in Mpls.

We envision a program that includes all areas of health careers: Opportunities, ideally beginning in elementary school, for students to explore a variety of careers before deciding on a career pathway Integration of academics with applied learning around a particular topic (e.g., a disease) that allows a variety of academic subjects to be connected
We envision a program that includes all areas of health careers: Emphasis on rigorous academics, especially in STEM A core curriculum (using nationally developed curriculum) regarding health care Opportunities for a continuum of work-based learning experiences including worksite visits, job shadows, summer STEP UP jobs, year-round STEP UP jobs, internships, apprenticeships, etc.
We envision a program that includes all areas of health careers: Opportunities to take college classes while in high school (concurrent enrollment, PSEO, etc.) A clear pathway from the K-12 and ABE/incumbent worker systems to 2- and 4-year colleges that build on high school coursework and allow for easy transfer from 2- to 4-year colleges
We envision a program that includes all areas of health careers: HOSA chapter integrated into program Understanding of impact of culture on ways of looking at health and wellness
Vision for Health Careers Program of Study Draft 3-09 ABE & Incumbent Workers K-12 Life Planning 9-12 Options Basic college prep curriculum with extra health courses College Transition Programs Work-Based Learning Options College Programs (See attached.) • Health Scholars Early College (100 students) • Targets high achievers wanting health care focus • Curriculum: basic MPS requirements, HCCC and MCTC curriculum, Project Lead the Way, Applied Learning • Teachers: 9-10 HS; 11-12 college Jump Start for all eligible 9-12 student • K-5: • Curriculum for career exploration provided by volunteers from business (e.g. Chamber, HealthForce Minnesota) (Get Ready?) • Field trips to workplaces • Field trips to colleges • PPL Programs • Health Careers Professions • Options arranged by Achieve WBL Coordinator: • Work-Site visits • Job Shadows • Options coordinated and supervised by Work Experience Coordinator: • School-year Internships • STEP UP summer (and year-round?) jobs • For Health Scholars Early College: • Up to Associates Degree by grade 13 • Classes offered at MCTC • For Roosevelt and North Health programs: • Up to 12 college credits: • HCCC – 8 credits • ADEV in Health • First Aid/CP • classes offered primarily at 9-12 school • Roosevelt Health Careers (350-500 students) • Attracts 9-12 students throughout MPS • Curriculum: basic MPS requirements, HCCC and MCTC curriculum • Teachers: 9-12 HS; concurrent enrollment • 6-8: • My Life Plan • Career exploration – opportunities to see all career fields • College readiness – opportunities to visit 2- and 4-year public and private colleges • Get Ready? Leadership and Summer Options Goal: Prepared and Diverse Health Care workforce • North Summa Tech Bio-Med Program • Attracts 9-12 students throughout MPS • Curriculum: basic MPS requirements, HCCC and MCTC curriculum, Project Lead the Way Bio Med? • Teachers: 9-12 HS; concurrent enrollment • For Wellstone Health Program: • Up to 6 college credits • ESOL ADEV with Health Focus • HCCC • First Aid/CP • Classes offered primarily at Wellstone • HOSA • Summer Experiences: • SCRUBS • Summer institutes at MCTC • WOW Academy • 9-12: • My Life Plan • Career exploration – job shadows and work-site visits, career fairs/days • College readiness – opportunities to visit colleges, college fairs, college reps, college searches in CCC, financial aid workshops and searches in CCC, application assistance For adult learners: • Wellstone Health Program • Attracts 9-12 students throughout MPS, ESL, ELL, new immigrant students (100) • Curriculum: basic MPS requirements, English language acquisition, HCCC and MCTC curriculum • Teachers: 9-12 HS; concurrent enrollment
