WHAT is a success? Schools and districts throughout Mississippi are making changes to improve nutrition and physical activity for students, staff, and families. Some are major changes - others are ‘baby’ steps towards a healthy school environment.

Amory School District Amory Middle School adopted a policy that allows students to drink water in the classroom - so they are properly hydrated and ready to learn.
Amory School District Amory Middle School received the “Active Lifestyle Model School Award” after successfully participating in the President’s Fitness Challenge.
DeSoto County Schools Hernando Elementary introduced a snack program where apples, oranges, and bananas are sold to students for just 25 cents.
Madison County Schools Madison Station Elementary promoted their breakfast program - more than doubling participation from 137 to 317 students.
Moss Point Schools Magnolia Junior High removed soft drinks from vending machines - replacing them with healthier choices - milk, 100% juice, and sports drinks.
Carroll County Schools Marshall Elementary removed soft drinks from vending machines - replacing them with healthier choices - milk, 100% juice, and sports drinks.
DeSoto County Schools Shadow Oaks Elementary offers 30 minutes of daily physical activity for every student - with special recognition for those who walk with the principal at recess.
Gulfport School District Pass Road Elementary students have daily FANtastic Movement Moments - 5 minutes of physical activity to help them be more alert and able to focus in class.
Brookhaven School District Alexander Junior High offers intramural basketball and volleyball, as well as walking, aerobics, and dance activities before school each day.
Starkville School District All elementary schools have removed deep fryers as part of their overall commitment toward healthier food preparation.
Columbus School District All schools have completely removed deep fryers as part of their overall commitment toward healthier food preparation.
Petal School District W.L. Smith Elementary teachers worked with students to set personal goals for a healthier lifestyle - and helped them monitor their weekly progress.
Clarksdale School District Schools now have Physical Education teachers to provide PE classes for all students.
Grenada School District Grenada Middle School began a morning exercise routine via school-wide telecasting - with students standing beside their desks in classrooms.
East Tallahatchie District Charleston Middle School involved parents in school wellness by sponsoring “Family Fun and Fitness Nights.”
Natchez-Adams District All schools involved parents in school wellness by sponsoring “Family Fun and Fitness Nights.”
Greenville Public Schools Stern Enhancement taught students about healthier food choices - and some then gave their parents advice while grocery shopping.
Jackson County Schools Four elementary schools (East Central Upper and Lower and Vancleave Upper and Lower)received Silver Awards in USDA’s HealthierUS School Challenge.
