  2. Bastille • Built around 1369 • Intended for Paris’s defense • By 1600’s used as a prison. • Prisoners include Marquis de Sade and Voltaire • Attacked by a mob on July 14, 1789 • Storming of the Bastille started French Revolution to overthrow Louis XVI • Seven Prisoners freed.

  3. Storming of the Bastille symbolized the end of the king as “God’s representative.” French Monarchy Ended Prison of Bastille later destroyed. National Holiday- July 14th To celebrate and remember: The storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789 End of monarchy The beginning of the First Republic Parties/Gatherings similar to 4th of July Bastille Day!July 14th

July 1989 During bicentennial of the French Revolution Charles Ott builds the Opera de la Bastille Bastille now a modern opera house. Opera house seats 2700 people Newest technology- close to metro. Neighborhood around Bastille filled with shops, theaters, clubs In once a run down community. Now in trendiest section of Paris Opera de la Bastille

La Sainte-Chapelle • Gothic Catholic Chapel • La Sainte-Chapelle means “the Holy Chapel” • Pierre de Montreuil was architect • Louis IX had it built • Built around 1244 • Created to hold relics of the Holy Land • Said to store Jesus Christ’s crown • Not intended to be a public building • During French Revolution it was symbol of royalty and religion. • Surrounded by Palais of Justice on the Ile de la Cité near Notre Dame • It was built within the courtyard of a royal palace

  6. Architecture based on palace chapels Modeled after chapels like Charlemagne built Lower level is the crypt, where the relics were stored. Spiral staircases Stained glass windows from floor to ceiling Create a beautiful mosaic of light on the floor from the sun. North windows depict scenes from the Old Testament South windows show New Testament scenes Architecture of the Sainte Chapelle

  7. La place de la Bastille était une prison. Maintenant c'est une maison d'opéra. La fête de la Bastille est le quatorze juillet. La Sainte Chapelle, c'est une chapelle gothique. C'est célèbre pour son architecture et ses vitraux. À la Sainte Chapelle on peut voir des reliques. En français
