WOMEN’S GYMNASTICS. By: Stacy Stephens. History Lesson. Gymnastics has been around for many centuries. The first club gymnastics was started in 1887 by the Massachusetts YMCA. In the early 1900’s high schools started to incorporate gymnastics into their curriculum for gym time.

  2. History Lesson • Gymnastics has been around for many centuries. The first club gymnastics was started in 1887 by the Massachusetts YMCA. • In the early 1900’s high schools started to incorporate gymnastics into their curriculum for gym time. • In 1951 Gymnastics started to take off with camps and clinics becoming available to gymnasts everywhere. • Now, in 2004, gymnastics is one of the most popular sports among young girls. Gymnastics was also the most watched sport in this years Summer Olympics.

  3. The Main Event • Women's Gymnastics has four apparatuses (events). All events are scored out of a 10.0 Vault Beam Bars Floor

  4. Gymnastics Legends • In the 1984 Olympic games, 15 year old Mary Lou Retton stole the show. Mary Lou scored two perfect 10’s on floor and vault. She was the first U.S. Gymnast to capture Olympic gold. In the 1976 Olympic Games Nadia was the first gymnast in Olympic history to score a perfect 10. Nadia took gymnastics to a new level, performing skills never attempted in the sport. Nadia Comaneci Mary Lou Retton

  5. Shannon Miller America’s Most Decorated Gymnast • Shannon Miller is one of theMOST TALENTEDgymnast in the entire history of the sport. She showed the entire world with her first appearance in the 1992 Olympics. With big expectations at the 1996 Olympics,she showed the world again, and came out withGOLD. Shannon has earned 7 Olympic medals and 9 World Championship medals. ^ Click Here

  6. The Magnificent Seven 1996 Olympics: Atlanta, Georgia They came to the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia with high expectations. However, no one knew that those expectations would lead the 7 women of the Olympic Team to capturing the All-Around gold. These 7 women will go down in Olympic History as The Magnificent Seven.

  8. Gymnastics 2004 Carly Patterson won Individual All-Around gold at the Olympics in Athens, Greece this summer. Carly is the 2nd female gymnast to do so. The 2004 Olympic Team took home the Silver Medal.
