  1. DR. MAHTANI OWNED PRISON FELLOWSHIP TO SUPPORT ZAMBIAN PRESIDENT’S QUEST

  2. Zambian President, on the occasion of Africa Day, made a stunning announcement.

  3. President Hakainde Hichilema announced his quest for abolishing death penalty row.

  4. The President termed the Death Penalty as an archaic law which does not hold any value in the current society.

  5. This announcement from the Zambian President received widespread support from across the Zambia.

  6. This is including noted businessman and philanthropist Dr. Rajan Mahtani. Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani

  7. Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani supported the announcement made by the Zambian President.

  8. He stated that the death penalty does not provide any solution for the Zambian Government.

  9. Majority of the past Presidents have tried to avoid capital punishment by using mercy prerogatives.

  10. The last capital punishment in Zambia was given in the year 1997.

  11. Since then, Presidents have tactically avoided the death penalty as it has become too controversial.

  12. This is all the more relevant considering the increasing awareness and voice towards abolishing the death penalty.

  13. This trend can be seen in Zambia too.

  14. Another reason for supporting President Hakainde is the current condition of the Zambian prisons.

  15. Zambian prisoners are extremely degrading, pathetic, and dangerous.

  16. The prisoners are often devoid of basic human dignity and fundamental human rights.

  17. Several past Presidents and Vice-Presidents visiting these Maximum facilities termed them as ‘hell’ and ‘unliveable’.

  18. The Zambian Government has collaborated with institutes such as Parole Board Zambia (PBZ) and Zambian Correctional Facilities (ZCF).

  19. This collaboration is for strategic decongestion of the prisoners. X

  20. Prisoners will be released after their full transformation and after they are ready to integrate into the society as law-abiding citizens.

  21. In such a scenario, giving death punishment does not provide any meaningful stance.

  22. Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani also praised Zambian President Hakainde.

  23. He is the only President who has made real efforts toward eradicating this archaic law from the Zambian legal system.

  24. Thank You
