  1. Meaning Of Consumers • One Who Consumes goods such as grocery, cloths, fruits, furniture etc • The consumer is considered to be well-informed about costs, price and quality of goods. • Consumer can be defined as an individual who purchases and uses products and services in contrast to manufactures who produce the goods or services and wholesalers or retailers who distribute and sell them.

  2. Consumers’ Organizations  The first organization was established in 1960 as the International Organisation of Consumers Unions (IOCU).  Consumer’s organization may operate by protests and campaigning.

  3.  Buying quality products at reasonable price.  Reading the label carefully before purchase.  Understanding the terms of the sale.  The Procure bills, warranty cards etc.  To check the weights and measures before making purchases.

  4.  Responsibility to think independently.  Be responsible to the environment  Be organized  Responsibility to speak out.

  5. Right To Safety The purchase goods and services availed of should not only meet their immediate needs, but also long term interests. Before purchasing, consumers should insist on the quality of the products as well on the guarantee of the products and services.

  6. Right to be informed It means right to be informed about quality, quantity, purity, standard and price of goods so as to protect the consumer against unfair trade practices.

  7. Right to choose Whenever possible, consumer should be given access to a variety of goods and services at different price.

  8. Right to be Heard It means that consumer’s interests will receive due consideration at appropriate forums. It also includes right to represented in various forums formed to consider the consumer’s welfare.

  9. Right to basic Needs This is consumer’s right to have access to basic and essential goods and services, such as adequate food, clothing, shelter, health care, education, public utilities, water, and sanitation.

  10. Right to Consumer Education It means the right to acquire the knowledge and skill to be an informed consumer throughout life. Ignorance of consumers, particularly of rural consumers, is mainly responsible for their exploitation. They should know their rights and must exercise them.
