About Hearing Protection- the Best Options

People that spend time around noisy machines in factories, or where jets take off, or those that have to listen to loud music in clubs al night, such as DJs, are often exposed to the dangers of hearing loss or heavy impairment, as the human ear was simply not designed for constant hammering by unnaturally loud noise caused by the mentioned machines and other instances.

  1. About Hearing Protection- the Best Options People that spend time around noisy machines in factories, or where jets take off, or those that have to listen to loud music in clubs al night, such as DJs, are often exposed to the dangers of hearing loss or heavy impairment, as the human ear was simply not designed for constant hammering by unnaturally loud noise caused by the mentioned machines and other instances. This is certainly true – if not more so – for hunters and other shooters that sometimes spend hours at a time having to listen to guns, rifles and pistols being fired. Think, too, of members of professions such as law enforcement, or the military in training, instructors at shooting school - the list goes on. All of these individuals are at risk of damaging their hearing – if they do not take proper precautions, such as wearing some form of protection in the ear. Much more than in the past there are some good options today for the person that wants to make sure they protect their hearing while out there on the range or in the bush – or in noisy work environments. When you find yourself at the practice range, for example, the problem is exacerbated because you do not listen to only your own gunshots, but also to those of other shooters. The same applies to some or other extent to hunters and wing-shooters that have to listen to not only their own gunfire, but to that of the other shooters as well. All of these sounds are termed together under so-called concussive blasts that cause high frequency reverberation that has to be absorbed by the eardrum. Because the eardrum is sensitive, such reverberations can quickly cause damage such as tears or cochlea damage. This can quickly lead to permanent hearing loss or tinnitus (ringing) in the long run. Therefore hunters and shooters, and other individuals, should do themselves a favor and heed the advice of the professionals: get protection for your ears. There are options. The most basic of these are earbuds which are inserted inside the ear. They do offer protection, but shooters are advised to stay away from cheap, untested buds – rather make sure you wear buds from a respected brand that has been tested to the correct ISO safety standards, and make sure they state the precise reduction in dB (decibel, the unit in which sound is measured) so that you know you are offering your ears good protection. Another option is to wear earmuffs which are placed over the ears to block out noise in the immediate environment. Among the better ones you will find some that are more than a piece that covers your ears.

  2. They actually come with features such as offering the user headphones that can amplify passive sounds of up to 85 dB. The benefit is that the user is able to hear range commands and other sound, but the sound of gunfire is eliminated. They are much more expensive than earplugs but offer better protection. The downside is that they are often in the way and can get lost easily when you do not pay attention. Then there is also the latest form of ear protection, which is much smaller and can be inserted perfectly into your ears. They are, like the mentioned muffs, not cheap either, but they offer digitally enhanced features that block out loud, harmful noise while letting through noise at acceptable dB levels. These are the latest, most advanced products on the market and are mentioned for their technologically advanced features such as controlling sound and, of course, for being small and easy to wear and pack away again. They are not for sale by retailers; instead, the user has them made to their specifications – to fit their ears perfectly, and to offer maximum protection.
