  1. Hunters Can Only Benefit from Hearing Protection Measures All hunters and shooters understand the discomfort they have to suffer from time to time as a result of the noise and loud sounds their ears are exposed to during the hunt, or during the preparation on the shooting range. Many of these individuals are exposed to a condition referred to as NIHL, which is Noise-Induced Hearing Loss, a condition that millions of Americans suffer from and which those individuals that listen to loud noise all the time, are candidates to develop. This group includes, of course, hunters and shooters, shooting instructors and similar individuals and professionals. When you’re out there and have the buck in your sight, you may forget about the loud sound emanating from your rifle when you pull the trigger, or when you empty your shotgun on the birds flying past. Because hunters do not always pay proper attention to hearing protection, they may forever be at a disadvantage when they should have been able to pick up the sounds of the deer or elk – or geese – they should have in order to enjoy a tactical advantage. Of course in this day and age it really is no longer necessary to limit yourself – there are great solutions that will help you avoid NIHL and similar conditions such as, say, tinnitus, which is a constant ringing in the ears that presents immediately after you fire. It can also last for many days on end. Every hunter can now take steps to help them limit the damage to their ears when they hear shots being fired around them all the time – as can other individuals who are also exposed to loud noise. You may either avail yourself of rather cheap solutions, which will help, or you can acquire one or more of the technologically advanced options, whether you are a shooter, or a hunter, a pilot that works around jets taking off, or a machine operator in a factory, or a DJ that works in clubs at night, always with the deafening sound of loud music in their ears. Research into the prevention of hearing loss has been going on for many years, and results often show that men who hunt regularly are more at risk than other individuals, and simply because they do not take the correct precautions. Of course it could be argued that hunters and shooters have indeed options to reduce the effect of loud gunshots on their ears, such as, say, keeping good distances from one another, or by using a suppressor; however, these are not the only (and at times practical) solutions. Almost every hunter and shooter are familiar with the term ‘decibels’, which refers to the measurement of sound intensity. Considering that gun and rifle shots measure at around 150 dB every time, it makes sense that you may well hurt those fine hairs in the ear that communicates with the brain, when ‘normal’ sound measures at around 60 or 70 dB every time. It is estimated that even 80 dB over an extended time will have an adverse effect on someone’s hearing ability. Wearing ear protection inside the ear has gained great popularity over the years and has become the greatest form of protection for hunters, shooters and other individuals that want to take measures to protect their hearing. There are options. The cheapest is the well-known foam ear plug which you buy almost anywhere, use and then throw away. There are also ear muffs and the newest generation of hearing protection devices, the electronic ear plug. These are more expensive but also much more effective as they do not only eliminate harmful sound, buy they allow sounds at acceptable dB levels through. This means you are not deafened; you simply protect your ears from the worst effects of gunshots and other noise.
