  2. What is Job Connect? • A program that assists Ontarians in researching careers and current labour market information • A program that helps Ontarians obtain sustainable employment • A program that provides employment services to employers who are licensed to operate in Ontario

  3. Guiding Principals • Allows participants to be as self-directed as possible • Assists individuals with the development of individualized employment action plans • Provides supports needed to bridge the gap between unemployment and employment in the most efficient and effective manner • Demonstrates services that are locally tailored to the needs of the community

  4. Components of Job Connect • Information and Resource Services (IRS) • Employment Planning and Preparation (EPP) • Job Development Placement Support (JDPS) • Summer Jobs Service (SJS)

Information and Resource Service • Access information on careers and occupations, the local job market, training opportunities, programs and services available in the community • Self –Directed job search • Resource Centre with access to computers and printers for writing your resume, cover letters or other job search related materials, conduct your search through the Internet at no charge

Information and Resource Service Continued • FREE - photocopying and faxing services for your convenience throughout your job search • Numerous books, videos, materials, and information available on handling an interview, writing cover letters and resumes, and understanding general workplace safety

Employment Planning and Preparation • Work one-on-one with an Employment Consultant • Assistance with identifying employment needs • Establishment of short and long term goals • Development of action plans • Preparation for finding and maintaining employment • Resume and cover letter assistance • Interview skills and techniques • Information/referral on educational options

  8. SJS – Summer Jobs Servicefor students Assists students returning to school aged 15-24 (29 with a disability) find summer employment Provides access to resource centres Assists with preparation of resumes Posts jobs from local employers

  9. SJS Summer Jobs Servicefor Employers Posts jobs May provide training incentive support Assists with hiring process Screens applications Minimal paperwork

Job Development Placement Support Services for Employers • May assist employers with training incentives • Free confidential job postings, pre-screening of potential candidates, scheduling of interviews and Job Fairs • Job trials, job coaching, and on-going employment support • Referrals to other community resources/programs when needed • Minimal paperwork required

Services for Job Seekers • Information on local labour market opportunities • Access to exclusive job leads • Assistance with marketing to employers • Access to Apprenticeship opportunities • Job trials to help assess job opportunities • Job coaching and continued on-going employment support • May provide training incentives where required

  12. Apprenticeship • Provides clients with information about apprenticeship • Matches clients with employers offering positions in apprenticeship • Assists with financial support for items such as, special clothing • May provide employers with training incentives

Where Are We? • Job Connect can be found at the following 21 colleges: • Confederation, Sault, Cambrian, Boreal, • Northern, Sheridan, Seneca, Centennial • St. Clair, Lambton, Fanshawe, • Mohawk, Conestoga, Niagara, Georgian, • Durham, Sir Sandford Fleming, Loyalist, Algonquin, St Lawrence, La Cite

  15. A Typical Client in 2005-06 39% - had less than a grade 12 education 41% - were under 20 years old 17% - were receiving social assistance 39% - had been out of school/work more than 26 weeks 67% - were still employed after three months of finishing the program

  16. Did You Know That In 2005-06 College Job Connect Sites: Placed 13,362 students in summer jobs Found jobs for 11,693 unemployed Ontarians and helped 772 clients become registered as apprentices Served 163,875 in Job Connect resource centres
