    31. 31 Slide 2 Laniteio Lykeio A’ is the oldest secondary school in Limassol and the second oldest school in Cyprus. It is a state school, which has played an important role in the national and spiritual life of the country. Laniteion Lykeio A’ was founded in 1819. Slide 3 In 1950 the school was moved to its present premises, donated by a prominent Limassol citizen. Mr. Nicolaos P. Lanitis. It was then given the name Laniteio in the early 1950s in his honour. His statue can be seen in the atrium on the left just before you enter the school. Slide 4 The school remained a six-year school until 1975 and then it was divided into two three-year cycles, the Gymnasium and the Lyceum. The schools are housed in different school buildings and have different principals. The Gymnasium offers a three-year cycle of general education to students from 12-15 years of age and the Lyceum offers specialised education to 15-18 year old students. Slide 5 Laniteio Lykeio A’ is a Unified State Lyceum. Its students choose their special subjects, from a great number of options, in the second and third grade. Students are evaluated on the basis of their participation in class, written tests during the three terms and written examinations at the end of each academic year. At the end of the third year the students take National Examinations. On completion of the third year, successful students are awarded the School Leaving Certificate (Apolyterio) which fulfils entry requirements at a number of European universities.
