  1. The Future of Cardboard Packaging Cardboard packaging has been in existence for over 150 years and there are a variety of cardboard types available, from corrugated to paperboard. Packaging manufacturers will often advise on the best option and type of cardboard depending upon purpose and what product is to be packaged. The cardboard boxes we know today which are pre-cut and easily assembled by folding were invented in 1890 and are still widely used today. Cardboard boxes or containers are used for a huge variety of purposes from food and drink containers, to boxes for storage and shipping. Packaging and shipping needs have changed and evolved over time to fall in line with technological advances and greater worldwide importing and exporting of goods. Cardboard packaging has had to change to fulfil new needs and requirements, from specialist packaging for certain products such as electrical components to cardboard packaging suitable for storing liquids, such as cartons. But with a greater focus on green issues and problems, such as the use of non recyclable goods, there has been a move away from traditional cardboard packaging to a greener alternative. Green packaging is a viable solution to those who feel traditional cardboard packaging fulfils all of their needs and requirements but who also want to use a product that does not damage the environment. Cardboard boxes can be reused and recycled and now it is possible to purchase cardboard boxes that are made from 100% recycled materials. Using recycled materials for packaging is not only beneficial to

  2. the environment but can often cost less as recycled materials are usually cheaper than purchasing new cardboard packaging. Green design & production is becoming increasingly prevalent within the marketplace, and not only in the world of packaging. We now see forward thinking designers creating artistic yet useful pieces from recycled items, including items such as cardboard furniture. With a large focus on green matters, and cardboard's ability to be completely reused and recycled, we may see this simple design and solution being used for another 150 years to come.
