What is arranged marriage?  • Someone other than the couple getting married chooses the couple • Often done to join two families • Different from forced marriages • Viewed as the norm in many cultures • Around 50% of the worlds population are married through arranged marriages • Researchers predict that arrange marriages will become more common • International Migration

India • Marriages formed out of love or "love marriages" do happen in India but it is not the norm. It is an accepted fact that a person's family will play a role in picking the marriage partner. • Divorce is frowned upon in India. • In modern arranged marriages, couples are allowed a small courtship with a guardian present, and if they do not want to be married the arrangement is then cancelled.
