  2. info@travcure.com +91 86000 44116 www.travcure.com What is Scoliosis? • Scoliosis is a medical condition that causes the spine to develop a sideways curve. The curve of the spine either represents the 'C' shape or the 'S' shape. • The deformity can occur in any part of the spine but most commonly affected regions are the chest area (Thoracic scoliosis) and the lower back region (Lumbar scoliosis). • Scoliosis affects around 3% of people and is more common amongst girls. It most commonly occurs between the ages 10 to 20.

  3. info@travcure.com +91 86000 44116 www.travcure.com Types of Scoliosis • Idiopathic Scoliosis is categorized into three types depending on the age when the deformity develops: • Infantile Idiopathic Scoliosis:Develops from birth to 3 years old • Juvenile Idiopathic Scoliosis:Develops in the age group 4-9 years • Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis:Develops from 10-18 years old • Apart from these 3 basic types of idiopathic scoliosis, there are several different types of curves depending on what side the spine curves to.

  4. info@travcure.com +91 86000 44116 www.travcure.com Causes of Scoliosis • Most cases of scoliosis do not have any known cause. Such type of scoliosis is termed as 'idiopathic scoliosis'. • Other causes of scoliosis includes congenital spine deformities like spina bifida and neuromuscular conditions like muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy etc. • Around 65% of scoliosis cases are idiopathic, 15% are congenital and 10% are caused due to neuromuscular problems.

  5. info@travcure.com +91 86000 44116 www.travcure.com Signs and Symptoms of Scoliosis • The head appears to be slightly off-center • Uneven hip, arms or leg lengths • Pain in back, Shoulders, neck and buttocks • The person seems to lean on one side • Constipation due to tightened organs from Curvature • Limited Mobility and Slow Nerve Action • In severe cases, heart and lung problems may be present

  6. info@travcure.com +91 86000 44116 www.travcure.com Diagnosing Scoliosis • Initially, the Doctor will conduct a physical examination of the spine, ribs, hip and shoulders. If the Physical examination shows possibilities of scoliosis, a scoliometer is used to measure the degree of the curve. • Adam's Forward Bend Test • Imaging Scans • Several neurological tests are performed to find out if there is any underlying cause for the deformity. If symptoms such as severe back pain is present, a CT or MRI scan may be done.

  7. info@travcure.com +91 86000 44116 www.travcure.com Treatments for Scoliosis If the patient has mild scoliosis, the Doctor will prescribe periodic monitoring every 4 to 6 months. However, if the Scoliosisis severe the treatment options mentioned below will be considered depending on factors such as the severity of the curve, age, gender, bone maturity etc. Casting: In infantile idiopathic scoliosis, doctors generally prescribe casting treatment instead of bracing. In this approach, a cast, made up of Plaster of Paris, is attached to the outside of the infant's body. The cast is to be worn at all times. The cast helps the infant's spine to gain back normal shape. It has to be changed at frequent intervals as the infant keeps growing rapidly.

  8. info@travcure.com +91 86000 44116 www.travcure.com Treatments for Scoliosis Bracing: Braces are used for patients with moderate scoliosis and those whose bones are still growing. Bracing does not cure or reverse scoliosis, it instead prevents the curve from progressing and thereby avoids the need for surgery. There are two types of braces: Thoracolumbosacral orthosis (TLSO): The most commonly used type of brace is made up of plastic and designed in such a way that it easily fits around the body's curves. It is not usually visible beneath clothing. Milwaukee Brace: This is a brace covering full torso including a neck ring that supports the chin and the back of the head. This brace is rarely used - only when TLSO bracing is not possible or non-effective.

  9. info@travcure.com +91 86000 44116 www.travcure.com Treatments for Scoliosis Surgery: When non-surgical methods fail to provide relief and the curve keeps progressing, Spine Surgery is the best way to cure scoliosis. Most doctors recommend Spinal fusion surgery for scoliosis treatment. Spinal Fusion Surgery: In this surgery, two or more vertebrae are fused together using new joint grafts. The fusion is performed so that they grow together at the spinal joint and form a solid bone that no longer moves. The surgery lasts for around 4-6 hours and the patient may have to stay for around 10 days in the hospital. Major benefit of Spinal Fusion Surgery is it has a proven track-record of being the most effective treatment for correcting scoliosis.
