SCIENCE Topic Atmosphere and Climate UNIT 5.5 PAGE 177 BY MR. ARAH, A.I
Starter Task • Let’s watch a video about the atmosphere. • From the video, • Why do you think the atmosphere is important for life on Earth?
Discuss the composition and structure of Earth’s atmosphere. • Understand how the atmosphere affects Earth's climate. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Let’s visit page 179 in our textbook to see changes in the atmosphere over the years
Task 1 • Attempt questions 4-7 in page 180
Let’s watch another video about the layers of the earth’ atmospheres. • From the video, • Copy and complete this table
LESSON 2 How the atmosphere affects Earth's climate
Starter Task • Analyze this chat and write your feedback
LEARNING OBJECTIVES Describe what an analogy is and how it can be used as a model Learn about how earth’s climate has changed
How Earth’s climate has changed • 1. The Greenhouse Effect • Definition: The greenhouse effect occurs when gases in the atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), and water vapor, trap heat from the Sun. • Process: • Solar radiation enters Earth's atmosphere and warms the surface. • The Earth emits this energy as infrared radiation (heat). • Greenhouse gases absorb and re-emit some of this heat back toward the surface, keeping the planet warm. • Impact: Without this natural effect, Earth's average temperature would be about 33°C colder, making it inhospitable for most life.
2. Albedo Effect • Definition: Albedo is the measure of how much sunlight is reflected by Earth's surface. • Process: • Bright surfaces like ice and snow reflect sunlight, reducing heat absorption. • Darker surfaces like oceans and forests absorb more heat. • Impact: Changes in surface cover (e.g., melting ice) can alter the balance of heat absorption and reflection, influencing climate.
3. Atmospheric Circulation • Definition: The movement of air due to differences in temperature and pressure distributes heat across the planet. • Process: • Warm air rises at the equator and moves toward the poles, while cooler air sinks and flows back toward the equator. • This creates wind patterns and ocean currents that help regulate temperature.
4. Ozone Layer • Definition: The ozone layer in the stratosphere absorbs harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the Sun. • Impact: By filtering UV radiation, it prevents overheating of Earth's surface and protects living organisms. • 5. Carbon and Water Cycles • Carbon Cycle: The atmosphere exchanges CO₂ with oceans, forests, and soil, influencing global temperatures. • Water Cycle: Water vapor, a greenhouse gas, regulates temperature and drives weather patterns.
6. Human Impact on the Atmosphere • Activities such as burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial processes increase greenhouse gas concentrations. • This enhances the greenhouse effect, leading to global warming and climate change.
