  2. LEAKAGE CURRENT IS A PHENOMENON THAT OCCURS WHEN A SMALL AMOUNT OF ELECTRICAL CURRENT FLOWS THROUGH AN UNINTENDED PATH IN AN ELECTRICAL SYSTEM.

  3. THIS CAN HAPPEN EVEN WHEN THE SYSTEM IS SUPPOSED TO BE IN AN "OFF" STATE OR IS INSULATED.

  4. LEAKAGE CURRENT IS A CRITICAL FACTOR IN THE DESIGN AND OPERATION OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS, AS IT CAN AFFECT THE EFFICIENCY, SAFETY, AND PERFORMANCE OF DEVICES.

  5. LEAKAGE CURRENT REFERS TO THE SMALL AMOUNT OF CURRENT THAT FLOWS FROM A LIVE CONDUCTOR (OR ENERGIZED CIRCUIT) THROUGH INSULATION, GROUNDED PARTS, OR TO THE CHASSIS OF A DEVICE.

  6. INSULATION MATERIALS ARE DESIGNED TO BLOCK CURRENT FLOW, BUT IF THE INSULATION DETERIORATES OVER TIME OR HAS IMPERFECTIONS, A SMALL AMOUNT OF CURRENT CAN "LEAK" THROUGH IT.

  7. LEAKAGE CURRENT CAN OCCUR DUE TO THE CAPACITIVE PROPERTIES OF CIRCUITS. WHEN CONDUCTORS ARE PLACED NEAR EACH OTHER, A SMALL AMOUNT OF CURRENT MAY TRANSFER THROUGH CAPACITANCE, ESPECIALLY IN AC SYSTEMS.

  8. THIS TYPE OF LEAKAGE CURRENT FLOWS FROM THE LIVE CONDUCTORS THROUGH INSULATION OR CAPACITIVE PATHS TO THE EARTH (GROUND).

  9. IT CAN HAPPEN DUE TO INSULATION FAULTS OR IN THE PRESENCE OF SIGNIFICANT CAPACITANCE BETWEEN THE LIVE CONDUCTORS AND THE EARTH.
