  2. Intro to blogs • What is a blog? • (n.) Short for Web log, a blog is a Web page that serves as a publicly accessible personal journal for an individual.   3. Some vocab • Blogger – author of a blog • Blogosphere – a.k.a. World Live Web, the world of blogs • Photoblog – blog of photos • Moblogging – to blog using a mobile device (either PDAs or cell phones)

  4. It’s aliiiiiive! Blogs appear to be static web pages, however they are pages that are updated regularly.

  5. To blog or not to blog? Why blog? • To express one’s opinions, an outlet • To present info, happenings, links, photos • To promote or market • To communicate or discuss

  6. Bloggers, the opinionated • The opinion of the author • Most blogs have a focus or a shtick • Represents the author’s interests or profession • See the “about” or profile or bio section

  7. LibraryStuff.net Librarystuff.netis maintained by Steven Cohen, who is an editor of PubSub Concepts and a library scientist, as well as a veteran blogger for technology and librarianship

  8. ResourceShelf.com Gary Price, an electronic librarian, uses his “blog” as a newsletter to convey resource news to information professionals. He is also one of the blogosphere’s most read authors.

  21. It’s contagious! The more traffic a blog gets, the bigger the discussion usually is, thus bringing together a variety of views and resources.

  22. So what’s blogging got to do with me? • Blogs have A LOT to do with librarianship • They help you keep current • They can inform and educate • They can help you (to help others) break down that digital divide

  25. Read blogs • To stay informed on the current trends in the profession • To read opinions • To access resources…links, articles • To be connected to other info, people, organizations, or ideas

  26. A blog for your library? Blogs can be used internally • Keep employees up-to-date • Archives as good reference material • Employees can communicate to each other • Get feedback from coworkers • Conversations are called “threads”

Blogs for marketing your library Or externally • Announcements to the community • Library hours/special closings • New resources, subscriptions, acquisitions • Workshops, training sessions, speakers • Introduce new staff to the community • Librarians/library staff can communicate to patrons in a team blog

  30. Now that you’re hooked… Create a blog • Using blogging software such as Blogger • A template but is customizable • Easy as filling out an online form

  32. The Good Pros: • Timely • Gets to the point • Easy to skim • Contextualized • What’s “hot”

  33. The Bad Cons: • Redundant • Obsolete • Trivial • Misinformation in the form of rumors or bias

  34. RSS • RDF site summary, rich site summary, or really simple syndication • an XML format for syndicating Web content. A Website that wants to allow other sites to publish some of its content creates an RSS document and registers the document with an RSS publisher.
