  1. How to set up journal What I know about animals ----------------------------------------------------------------- What do I think I need to know/want to know ------------------------------------------------------------------ What have I learned that I didn’t already know

  2. Classification of Organisms • S7L1. Students will investigate the diversity of living organisms and how they can be compared scientifically. • a. Demonstrate the process for the development of a dichotomous key. • b. Classify organisms based on physical characteristics using a dichotomous key of the six kingdom system (archaebacteria, eubacteria, protists, fungi, plants, and animals).

  3. Why Do Scientists Classify? • Classificationis the process of grouping things based on their similarities. • Biologists use classification to organize living things into groups so that the organisms are easier to study. • Taxonomyis the scientific study of how living things are classified.

  4. Classification Most biologists today classify organisms into eight levels. The Eight Levels of Classification • DomainDid • KingdomKing • Phylum Phillip • ClassCome • OrderOver • Family For • GenusGrape • SpeciesSoda

  5. The Three Domains Organisms are placed into domains and kingdoms based on their cells, ability to make food, and the number of cells that make them up. Domain Bacteriaconsists of the kingdom Eubacteria. DomainArchaeaconsists of the kingdom Archaebacteria. DomainEukaryaconsists of four kingdoms: Protists, Fungi, Plants and Animals

  6. The Characteristics of the Six Kingdoms What are the six kingdoms? • Archaebacteria • Eubacteria • Protists 3. • Fungi • Plants • Animals 5. 2. 1. 6. 4.
