  4. MetroHealth Medical Center • 9,140 ambulatory surgeries • ~80,000 ED visits • Metro Life Flight logged 3,269 transports • Nearly 6000 staff • 399 physicians; 1,050 registered nurses • 350 physicians in training

  5. Pediatrics Department History • Established in 1922, joint department with University Hospital • Autonomous department in 1950 • Autonomous Pediatric Residency training since 1986

  17. Residency Aspects

  18. Number of residents • Medium sized program • Eight Pediatric Residents per year of training (total 24) • Six Med Peds Residents per year of training (half in Peds at any given time) • Total 36 residents at any given time

  19. Teaching Activities Typical week • Ambulatory pediatrics lecture 8.00 to 8.30 am, Monday to Thursday • Morning report, 8.30 to 9.00 am Mon to Thu • Grand rounds 8.00 to 9.00 am on Fridays • Noon conf 12.00 to 1.00 PM Mon to Fri • Other topic discussions in every division

  20. Teaching Activities • Distribution and content of topics is based on ABP recommendations • Time distribution is proportionate to the percentage representation in boards • Journal clubs • Monthly board review series • Annual free board review course - > 25 hours long

  21. Teaching Activities • Evidence Based Medicine series • Residents are educated on EBM with tools to critic literature • Residents present their EBM task • Quality Improvement Projects • Personal Continuous Quality Improvement • System Improvement

  22. Team Clinic • Same day every week • Same preceptor every week - “single preceptor concept” • Located at main campus • Wide diversity in medical and social issues • Residents own their patients

  23. Comprehensive Care Division • Unique division • Cares for children with multiple health needs • Complex patients, syndromes etc • Meeting their needs at home including home ventilator management • Imparts confidence in handling these problems in the community

  24. Other Attractions • Low number of fellows • Residents interact directly with attendings • Opportunity for procedures • Confidence in handling NICU/PICU issues in the community • Post call free taxi ride • No night float system
