A Teamwork Production BOLLYWOOD LOVE STORY A Musical 27th Aug – 31st Aug-The Playhouse Company- Durban 4th Sept – 14th Sept- Market Theatre - Johannesburg ‘All the passion and cheesy plot devices of classic Bollywood musical cinema comes together in a production that sings, dances and even has a political edge …. at every turn of the plot, the cast breaks out into song. Big allegorical numbers that turn the city’s dusty streets into paths by rivers of gold.’ The production has won rave reviews and has been playing to capacity audiences and standing ovations across Europe.

A Teamwork Production UNCHARTED SEAS ADITI MANGALDAS DANCE COMPANY 14th Sept– The Playhouse Company – Durban 16th & 17th Sept– Wits Theatre - Johannesburg 19th Sept – Cape Town Aditi Mangaldas is one of the foremost exponents of the Indian classical dance form Kathak . Using the strength of this form she has attempted to carve out a contemporary vocabulary of her own. Her performances reflect the spirit of kathak and go beyond its form and content to create a new language. The search for the intangible, may we call it God, truth, beauty, love or freedom, is the essence of UNCHARTED SEAS. Though I have separated the pieces, it is actually the entire production viewed in it’s entirety that tries to capture the essence of ' SEARCH'. Some are attempt to transform poetry into images or emotions. Others use abstractions of movement, light, space, rhythm ,ambience to evoke images asking the same questions."       -  Aditi Mangaldas  

7. PANCHAKANYA GAYATRI SHRIRAM 7th Sept - Theatre on the Square – Johannesburg The Panchakanya, is the story of five Indian women from Indian epics depicting their beauty, wit, power & innocence. Presented in traditional Bharatanatyam, Panchakanya, is a fusion of Swara and Jati patterns, intermingled with Sanskrit Shlokas . Gayatri Sriram is often described by the press as “graceful and scintillating” Gayatri executes the Bharatanatyam repertoire with the keen lines and precision that the Kalakshetra background gives her .

8. GAYATRI GAYATRIJANAK KHENDRY DANCE COMPANY2nd Oct - City Hall - Durban3rd Oct- Great Hall - Pretoria Gayatri is a quintessential symbol of living Indian Tradition. Gayatri – a Mantra from the Rig Veda, the oldest scripture, is about life, light and creation. It is an epithet to the Goddess Durga or Shakti – the Supreme Power. • Gayatri has been the conscience of the Indian people for the last three thousand five hundred years. Because of its importance and its potency, it has permeated the Indian psychy. Although Gayatri, the most important Mantra has been the breath of Indian people for many centuries, this is the first time it has been created as a dance work. An internationally renowned classical dancer and choreographer he has trained extensively in 3 distinct dance styles of India Bharatnatyam , Kathak and Manipuri. His forte is in choreoreographing works based on rare philosophical subjects that have never been attempted as dance works.

9. GILLES CHUYENContemporary Dance Gilles Chuyen, has worked extensively for the last 15 years, with Chhau Mayurbhanj (Orissa), Bharata Natyam and Kathak. He performed and choreographed Bollywood Mix Masala for Auto China, Beijing, and the musical Yeh hai Mumbai, meri Jaan, at the Edinburgh Festival. He choreographed the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games Arts Festival Melbourne and a spectacular Bollywood show with Australian dancers in March 2006. Gilles has choreographed for Films , Theatre and Fashion shows as well.

Words on Water Festival of Indian Writers in South Africa 13th Sept - KZN University -Durban 15th Sept – 17th Sept- Witwatersrand University -Johannesburg • The literary festival of Indian writers in South Africa will showcase recent trends • and developments in Indian literature. The week long festival will profile Indian • writers in conversation with their South African counterparts. • Readings, book signings, symposiums and discussions will provide an opportunity • to interact with the writers. A writers retreat with exclusive readings and poetry for • guests at a wild life resort will be a special feature. • Proposed authors include Kunal Basu,Nayantara Sehgal , Pavan Varma, William • Dalrymple & Urvashi Butalia

11. SHORT BIOS OF AUTHORS • Nayantara Sahgal is a writer and political commentator. She has published eight novels and seven pieces of non fiction. Her award winning work includes Rich Like Us which won the Sinclair Fiction Prize, and Plans for Departure which won the Commonwealth Writers Prize. . • William Dalrymple is the author of five acclaimed works of history and travel, including City of Djinns, From the Holy Mountain; White Mughals, and The Last Mughal. He is a contributor to The New York Review of Books, The New Yorker, The New Statesman and The Guardian. • Kunal Basu is an author, actor, and director. He has penned three novels, The Opium Clerk, The Miniaturist, and Racists. His book of short stories, The Japanese Wife, is being made into a film by Aparna Sen. The Calcutta based author is also an academic and currently directs the Oxford University Advanced Management Programme. • Urvashi Butalia is the publisher of Zubaan, a feminist publishing house and an imprint of Kali for Women. She is also a writer and activist, having been involved in the women's movement for many decades. Among her published works are: Women and the Hindu Right: A Collection of Essays (co edited with Tanika Sarkar), Speaking Peace: Women's Voices on Kashmir (edited) and the award winning oral history of Partition: The Other Side of Silence: Voices from the Partition of India. • Pavan K. Varma. Apart from being a prominent diplomat he is a writer with over a dozen books to his credit, including Krishna: The Playful Divine; Ghalib: The Man, The Times and the Havelis of Old Delhi. His books on contemporary subjects - The Great Indian Middle Class; Being Indian: The Truth About Why the 21st Century Will Be India’s, have been path breaking. A widely admired public speaker, Pavan K. Varma is currently the Director General of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, New Delhi.

L SUBRAMANIAM 26th & 27th Sept Bass Line, 28th Sept – Linder Auditorium- Johannesburg 29th Sept – Great Hall, Pretoria2nd Oct- City Hall- Durban - In Concert with the Durban Philharmonic Orchestra4th Oct – Cape Town Dr. L Subramaniam, India’s violin icon is often called The Paganini of Indian Classical music”, “the God of Indian Violin” Subramaniam has made historic collaborations and recordings with people like Yehudi Menuhin, Stephane Grappelli, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Ruggiero Ricci, Herbie Hancock, George Duke, Jean Luc Ponty, Earl Klugh, Larry Corryel, Corky Seagal and Ravi Coltrane He has composed music for a few films, including “Salaam Bombay” and “Mississippi Masala” and was the featured soloist for Bernardo Bertolucci’s “Little Buddha” and “Cotton Mary” of Merchant – Ivory Productions.

Together they create music that brooks no compromise but is free-flowing, fluent and melodic. Music that embraces influences with abandon and pays tribute to melody, harmony and individualistic vision.

16. QAWWALI NIGHTBY GHULAM NIAZI KHAN • Qawwal Ghulam Qadir will sing the Sufiana Kalam of the legendary Sufi poet Hazrat Amir Khusro. These will be followed by Ghazals by the renowned poet Fanah Kanpuri. • Gulam Qadir was inspired to take up music as a profession by his father, Late Inam Ahmed Qamal Saheb. He is a vocalist of tremendous capabilities and follows the Hindustani Classical and Qawaali styles of singing.

A Teamwork Production AAMIR KHAN - FILM RETROSPECTIVE A film retrospective of the celebrated actor will include “ In Conversation with Aamir Khan” Sun Coast Cinemas – Durban Nu Metro Cinema – Johannesburg It is difficult to relentlessly pay close attention to detail with a diligence and passion that is always directed towards offering the best in front of the camera. Aamir Khan has done just that. His refreshing down-to earth persona combined with the unusual intensity and commitment with which he tackles every role has earned him undying love and respect from his audience. Films like Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Dil Hain Ki Manta Nahin, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander, Rangeela, Ghulam, Dil Chahta Hai , 1947 Earth, Lagaan and Sarfarosh Tareen Zameen Par and Rang De Basanti constitute a body of work that any actor would be envious of.

19. THE INDIGO STORY Indigo has been an enigma, evoking mixed emotions, at different periods of history. Beginning with how the charm for Indigo led to its own trade route in ancient times, the exhibition will dwell on the Champaran Struggle, the first unified non-violent uprising which led to India's Independence. It will be highlighted that Indigo is not 'bad', on the contrary, desirable for it's beauty and it's therapeutic and eco-friendly qualities. The display section will include antique and contemporary exhibits of textiles and products of different materials, both national and international. Both sections will have textile exhibits of regional diversity in forms and textures. Exciting old and new textiles, along with products in wood, paper etc will be included. Also, contemporary work being done by individuals or otherwise will be sourced from all over the world. Anjana Somany – Curator

20. SATYAGRAHA Contemporary Indian Visual Art The notions of Satyagraha and peaceful non violence are increasingly relevant in a world where terrorism has become a reality. The exhibition will interrogate the notions of M. K. Gandhi’s Satyagraha and non - violence through the works of Contemporary Indian Artists. Arpana Kaur, Bulbul Sharma, Jatin Das, Satish Gujral, etc.

21. Inner Voices Having lived off the streets in Delhi over their growing years, the central theme of the exhibition is street life . Haran and Vicky Roy are exceptional photographers and have won leading awards in India and abroad. The exhibition can travel through townships and will be part of a workshop program with young people in association with he J&J Foundation and Mandela Youth Center.
