Objectives • Celebrate May Day in solidarity with Haitian trade unionists; • Gain a better understanding of current situation of the CTSP; • Hear first hand the needs of trade union activists; listen and learn from them; • Develop ideas for on-the-ground projects; • Solidarity, dignity and respect – NOT charity.

  3. Our objective was to find out what direct assistance the CTSP needs and how best to provide it to them so that they can effectively re-build capacity, participate in re-building their country, and advance their priorities for workers and public services. In one sentence…

The CTSP • Confederation des travailleurs et des travailleuses des secteurs public et privé (Confederation of Public and Private Sector workers); • Comprises 12 unions representing electriciy, transport, teachers, telecommunications, post, health, national press, archives, municipality of Port-au-Prince,and workers in maternity and social benefits; • Founded in 2008 • Affiliated to PSI in 2009 • 6000 members • 300 members perished in the earthquake

CTSP mobilizing to assist members • Shelter site set up on land owned by electricity company pension fund • FESTREDH (electricity union) is coordinating the site • 60 families (250 individuals) living on site • 1720 families registered for the site • Needs include tents, tools, tarps, water tanks, temporary shelters

  33. Support for the CTSP • Bilateral relationships with CTSP and PSI and its affiliates • In the current context, material assistance is akin to capacity building • CTSP’s priorities: food aid, assistance to family members of victims, new offices

PSAC SJF: Support for Haiti to date • $210,000 raised • $45,000 distributed in humanitarian relief so far: • $15,000 to PSI for the CTSP • $10,000 to the FTQ Haiti Solidarity Fund • $10,000 to Médecins sans frontières (MSF) • $5,000 to the CTH (ITUC affiliate) • $5,000 to the Women’s Platform

The PSAC SJF: Some ideas • Developing initiatives to support women trade unionists • Support the Plate Forme Femmes Citoyennes Haïti Solidaire • Sectoral partnerships with CTSP – eg: agriculture (food safety and food production), transport, archives • Campaign for public services and decent work • Professional and technical training programmes and capacity building
