  1. ALGEBRAIC FRACTIONS Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying, Dividing

  2. ALGEBRAIC FRACTIONS Algebraic fractions are simply fractions with algebraic expressions on top and/or bottom. When adding or subtracting algebraic fractions, the first thing to do is to put them onto a common denominator.

  3. STEPS TO ADDING ALGEBRAIC FRACTIONS WITH LIKE DENOMINATORS Step 1: Add the numerator, and put the answer over the denominator. Step 2: Keep the denominators the same. Step 3: Simplify the fraction if necessary.

  4. Example:

  5. SUBTRACTING ALGEBRAIC FRACTIONS Subtracting algebraic fractions work the same as adding them, but instead of adding the fractions you subtract.

  6. Example:

  7. MULTIPLYING ALGEBRAIC FRACTIONS When multiplying algebraic fractions, instead of keeping the denominators the same we multiply both the numerator and denominator across.

  8. STEPS TO MULTIPLYING ALGEBRAIC FRACTIONS Step 1: Multiply the numerators of each fraction together to get the new numerator. Step 2: Multiply the denominators of each fraction together to get the new denominator Step 3: Simplify the fraction if necessary.

  9. Example:

  10. DIVIDING ALGEBRAIC FRACTONS Dividing algebraic fraction is similar to multiplying them, but instead of multiplying across you must flip the second fraction then you may multiply across.

  11. STEPS TO DIVIDING ALGRBRAIC FRACTIONS Step 1: Write down the first fraction. Step 2: Change the sign from division to multiplication. Step 3: Flip the second fraction Step 4: Multiply across and simplify if necessary.

  12. Example:

  13. ALGEBRAIC FRACTIONS WITH UNLIKE DENOMINATORS When solving algebraic fractions the denominators must always be the same. If they are not you can use different methods to do this.

  14. STEPS TO BUTTERFLY METHOD Step 1: Multiply the denominators together to get the new denominator. Step 2: Cross multiply the denominators of each fraction with the numerator of the next. Step 3: Add or subtract the product of the cross multiplication to get the new numerator Step 4: Simplify the fraction if necessary.

  15. Example:
