  2. FLORA AND FAUNA • In this power point we will deal with the flora and fauna of Ibiza, the island where we live. As it is an island, Ibiza has a different biodiversity from Spain.

  3. OUR FLORA • The diversity of the flora in Ibiza is due to the weather and the number of species (there are more than 1000). All the plants are adapted to the Mediterranean weather whose characteristics are mild temperature, drought, rain only in sprint and autumn and coincidence between the dry season and the warm season, that is the reason why our plants have to bear a strong drought. • The main adaptations of the plants to bear the drought are: • They have small, hard leaves sometimes they are curved to avoid the loss of water. • The roots are really long.

  4. Pinus halepensis • The pine tree is the most characteristic species in our landscape, that is why our island (Eivissa and Formentera) are cold Pine Islands.

  5. Juniperus phoenicea i Pistacea lentiscus • Other plants we can see in our forests are for example, Phoenicean Juniper (image above) and the Pistacea (image below).

  6. Rosmarinus officinalis (left) Cistus albidus( right)

  7. Posidonea oceanica • The Posidonia oceanica (The Mediterranean Posidonia). An aquatic plant that leaves rooted in the marine depths, up to 40 metres below, forming authentic prairies. It forms a net of rhizomes covered by fibres, which are very slow growing and are found beneath the marine sediment. From these rhizomes emerge sheaths of long leaves, up to 50 cm in length, with parallel margins and rounded apex. The leaves are often covered with small invertebrates and epiphytic algae. The flowers are hard to see, as they are made up of small spicules situated upon a large peduncle. When they fructify, the resulting berry resembles an olive, which can be found along the beach surf line, along with remnants of leaves, rhizomes and fibrous balls from this plant.

  8. PLANTES CULTIVADES • Les més comunes són: • Orange tree • Almond tree
