Asbestos was once widely used in insulation, flooring and roofing due to its durability and fire-resistant properties. But when disturbed, its microscopic fibres can be inhaled and cause life-threatening illnesses like asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer. The challenge is that asbestos cannot be identified simply by looking at a material, which means workers could unknowingly expose themselves while carrying out routine tasks such as drilling, cutting or demolition.
