  1. Attending a conference can feel overwhelming. You head from one discussion to the next, you spend the late afternoons catching up on work, followed by evening entertainment, networking and growing your brand visibility. To get the most out of your national based conference experience, you will want to identify how to choose the right sessions you should be attending, how to arrange meetings and how to grow your brand to ensure your attendance is a complete success. When you work for a company, you always end up at one conference or another, they are unavoidable. But when you are your own boss, a national based conference can be more beneficial than you realize. Networking has become more important than ever before. In order to achieve your company goals, you need to be using social media to your advantage and you need to attend events where you can rub shoulders (in person or virtually) with potential suppliers and customers. You need to change the way you think and how you want to grow your brand. For some people, attending an event just to network is daunting and scary. Not many people are good at talking about themselves and their business, pushing their brand and ensuring that they reach as many people as possible in person. Networking is essential to your long term career. Frequent networking can keep you motivated and boost professional growth. Take note of the people attending the event. You should do this a few weeks before the start of the conference. Take a look at the guest speakers, the discussion lineups and the type of people attending. If you find some names you recognize, you can take this opportunity to introduce yourself. You can even arrange to set up some meetings during breaks to meet potential suppliers and customers, promote your brand and ensure you grow your referral database to achieve success. A conference can be a whirlwind event, which is why you want to plan your time carefully. A four day event can include a mix of sessions, meet and greets, entertainment and more, if you plan your time properly. Take the time to go through the agenda, identifying the sessions that will best meet your industry and business goals. Take note of any industry influencers or notable people in your industry that may be speaking or attending, which can benefit you in the long run. For some people, walking into a room, shaking hands and presenting their brand comes

  2. naturally, for others it is anxiety inducing. In order to achieve success at the event, it’s important that you network on your terms. This means catching a small group during a coffee break and going over to introduce yourself, rather than sitting in the corner staring at your smartphone. Smaller groups are less daunting than large ones and you can introduce yourself and join in on a discussion with ease. Once you have introduced yourself, it’s a good ideal to listen, rather than talk. You can learn so much about potential clients and suppliers by simply listening to general discussion. You can use this to catch up with them after the event to offer your services or products based on what they need. It's very important when it comes to making the most of your conference experience that you take some time out for yourself. You will be exhausted if you spend the entire time running from one session to another and the rest of the time networking. Take time to see the sights if you are in a different town or city, take a break and go for coffee with a friend or someone you know that is attending the same event.
