Project Overview • Improvements are designed to improve safety and reliability • By 2009, travel along the corridor will be safer for residents, commuters and tourists • Over the longer term, highway improvements will serve population growth, economic development in corridor communities and increasing demand for resident travel, visitor travel and goods movement

Highway Improvements • Sea-to-Sky Highway Improvements from Horseshoe Bay to Whistler • 4 lanes Horseshoe Bay to Lions Bay • 2 lanes Lions Bay to Porteau Cove (3rd lane on rail bed for Olympics) • 3 lanes from Porteau Cove to Squamish • 4 lanes within urban Squamish • 3 lanes from Squamish to Whistler

  4. Goals • Safety improvements • Reliability improvements • Capacity improvements • Complete the project 2009 • Minimize traffic disruption and maximize predictability • On time, on budget

  5. Safety • Improve the safety of the highway for residents, commuters and visitors • Number and severity of accidents is substantially higher than average • Safety improvements will result in fewer accidents per year

  6. Reliability • Improve the reliability of the highway • Currently lack of reliability due to traffic delays and safety issues

  7. Capacity • Improve capacity of the highway to serve increased growth and ease congestion • Current lack of capacity reduces safety and hampers goods movement

  8. Traffic Management • Efficient traffic management is essential to the success of the project • Minimizing delays and maximizing predictability is important to the project schedule, stakeholders and the public

  9. Sea-to-Sky Highway Improvement Draft Pre-Design Options

  10. Draft Pre-Design Options • Improvements for the 7 km section of the Sea-to-Sky Highway from east of Eagle Ridge to Sunset Beach are designed to improve safety, reliability and capacity, consistent with the goals for the overall project.

  11. Draft Pre-Design Options • Four draft options have been developed for input and feedback from the community. Draft options address project goals and community concerns to varying degrees.

  12. Option A - 2 Northbound lanes upslope • 2 northbound lanes use a new route constructed upslope • 2 southbound lanes use the existing Highway 99 route
