GREECE ~ 2008 Number of inhabitants: 11 million inhabitants (2001)Illiteracy: 9 % Number of Bookstores: 2.650 1.070: Bookstores that belong to Book Organizations 1.500: Small Bookstores & supermarkets 80: Stationary Stores No of Newsstands with books: ~ 850 Number of Publishers: 650 (in 1990: 374) VAT rate: 4,5%  for books 19%  for magazines & multimedia Fixed Book Prices: there is a fixed price for “2 years old” new titles.(the booksellers have the right to make a discount until 10% for these new -2 years old- titles. Older titles can be sold with bigger discount, depending on each bookseller.

  4. GREECE ~ 2008 Reading Habits of Population: ►read a lot  8,6% read a little  25,4% don’t read at all  43,8% ► women read more than men ► Reasons they don’ t read books: don’t have time 39,1% don’t like reading/bored of it 18,3 % not interested 5,9 %

There is a University for librarians.

GREECE ~ 2008 Promotion of Trade and Marketing: Book Fairs ► Book Festival, in Athens, at Dionisiou Aeropagitou str, under Acropolis. 2 times a year (the last 50 years) for 17 days, in September and in May. ► Book Fair in Piraeus (the harbor of Athens) nearby the sea. ► Book Fair at Thessaloniki (nearby the sea) ► International Book Fair of Thessaloniki (the last 5 years) with publishers from Greece & Europe.Exchange of foreign rights, conferences for Publishers and Booksellers, and book presentations.

GREECE ~ 2008 “Hellenic Federation of Publishers and Booksellers” ( POEV – www.poev.gr) -POEV was founded in 1961. -It is not a non-profit organization, but a federation. -POEV’s members are all the Unions of Booksellers and Publishers of every big city of Greece. -The income comes from every Union which organizes book fairs in every big city. -The Federation is currently a member of the IPA, FEP and EBF -in 1974, the Federation took part in the Frankfurt Book Fair in which it has been participating every year since then, as long as to all big book Fairs around the world. -In 1998, the catalogue of Greek Bibliography was transcribed in a digital form under the name “VIVLIONET” (www.biblionet.gr) -Greece was an honored country in the Frankfurt book fair of 2001.
