  4. Highlights from 2005 NEC Article 409

  5. Overview of Supplement SB from UL 508A

  6. Overview of Supplement SB from UL 508A • Paragraph SB3.2.1 states that the primary short circuit protective device for the Control Circuit is also included in the calculation for the SCCR for the Power Circuit. • Therefore, the SCCR of a Supplementary Protector or set of Fuses used on the primary side of a Control Power Transformer are included in the determination of the SCCR of the Control Panel. • Control Circuit Components downstream of these devices would not be included in the calculation of the SCCR • Examples of Control Circuit Components: Control Circuit Components are not included in the Panel SCCR calculation

  7. Overview of Supplement SB from UL 508A • SB4.2 - Determine the SCCR of Individual Power Circuit Components • From the device markings • From a UL Table that lists the assumed max SCCR for unmarked components • From Manufacturer’s UL listed Combination Motor Controller testing of multiple components • SB4.3 - Modify the SCCR when using Current Limiting Feeder Components • Review the Peak Let-through Currents • Current Limiting Circuit Breakers • Fuses • SB4.4 - Determine the SCCR of the Control Panel based on the lowest SCCR of any component or circuit

  32. SB4.3 – Current Limiting Devices

  33. SB4.3 – Current Limiting Devices • Example 1: Standard Breaker • ED63B100 100A 25 kA @480V • All components downstream have a rating of at least 25 kA • Panel SCCR = 25 kA • Example 2: Current Limiting Breaker • CED63B100 100A 200 kA @480V • At 100 kA the CED63 has a peak let through current of 22 kA • All components downstream have a rating of at least 25 kA • All components have a SCCR higher than 22 kA • Panel SCCR = 100 kA 22 kA 100 kA

  34. 41. What does this mean to Siemens? • We must focus on SCCR Ratings as a competitive advantage for our customers • Customers will migrate to tested combinations • Focus will be on single manufacturers for Power Circuit Components • Lack of focus may cause loss of breaker sales to fuses • Use tested combinations as advantage to displace niche and emerging competitors • Testing combinations is expensive and time consuming • It is unlikely that Manufacturers will test with competitor’s products • OEMs would have to submit their panel at their expense when not using combination tested components • What to do when Customers request SCCRs for individual components • Clarify Request • Individual Components • Tested Combinations • Use E-mail script from SiteScape • Send them to our on-line Resource Center

  42. Issues / Comments • Not all States have adopted the 2005 Code • Inspectors have not been trained on UL 508A SCCR process • If we don’t educate our customers, our competitors will • Talk with confidence

  43. Summary of Resources • On-line Resource Center • White Paper • Combination Motor Controller files • Additional UL files for non-Combination testing • Link to Official UL Website for SCCRs by competitor • Links to Standards Organizations for additional information • SiteScape • A copy of this Power Point • Folder Path: Product Information / Controls – D, Dx, T, V Modules / General • File Name: SCCR Overview UL508A NEC409 May 11 2006.PPT • E-mail Script for Customer Inquiries • Folder Path: Product Information / Controls – D, Dx, T, V Modules / General • File Name: SCCR E-mail Script.doc

  44.
