  1. Choosing The Best Bed Linen for Your Bedrooms Every houseproud man and woman want to know they have gone to trouble to make all the rooms in their home look attractive and beautiful, in addition to using the rooms for what their main purpose is, whether that is to serve as a lounge or dining room, or as a bedroom, for instance. When it comes to bedrooms, linen duvet covers are certainly important. WHAT IS A DUVET COVER? The terms ‘duvet’ and ‘comforter’ are sometimes used interchangeably, especially in the U.S., where a comforter refers to a covering that is sewn shut and is used as is; you do not need a cover for it. The duvet is slightly different and refers to a bed covering that is filled with down or a synthetic fabric. This duvet – to keep it clean – is inserted into a duvet cover, which you can remove, wash and iron and put back, or change with another as you please. Changing duvet covers often forms part of decorating a room in colours and fabrics of the owner’s choice. ABOUT FABRICS There are so many choices on the market these days, right from fairly cheap options to cotton and, for a growing number of homeowners, linen. Linen is made from the flax plant that grows and is harvested in many parts of the world – also with great success in France, Belgium and other parts of Western Europe where it is spun into the linen fabric. Linen is very popular along the Mediterranean and in parts of the U.S. and South America, with more and more interest being shown in the fabric in Europe too – also in the U.K where linen duvet covers and other items made of the fabric are becoming one of the preferred options. LINEN – ITS APPEARANCE It is so easy to recognise the linen fabric, as it appears naturally crumpled, which is its discerning outwardly feature. You do not have to iron your linen, but nothing stops you from doing it either. Most people, however, love the creased, laidback look of the fabric – especially in clothes. For your bedroom you may want to iron your linen sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers for a ‘neater’ look. REASONS TO ACQUIRE ITEMS MADE FROM LINEN So why would someone acquire linen as opposed to other – often cheaper – options? The reasons vary from one person to the next, but all will most likely agree that the fabric is very durable and outlasts many others. It is also easy to maintain and keep clean. Linen fabric is machine washable and dries quickly in the sun. You can also tumble dry it at a low temperature. Further: it is a fabric that reacts to the reigning room temperature, which means when it is cold, it retains the warmth you are looking for, whereas it helps to keep you cool in summer. CHOICES When it comes to choices of design, colours and size, you are offered so many options these days, which also depends on where you shop. Linen is often referred to as one of the so-called ‘earthy fabrics (for its natural look) which means colours often tend to be earthy too. Think Olive Green, French Blue, Mustard and the ever-popular rusty Brick and Burgundy. All of these tend to be subdued colours, and even though they are easy to spot, they tend to be more subdued than many bright colours. STYLES These days there are many styles and finishes to choose from, and once again: it depends where you shop and acquire your linen bed linen and other items. Linen duvet covers may be very plain, or they may be designed with borders, or with ruffles. Some may have a zip to open them; others will have buttons. There is a great choice out there. Linen is growing in popularity all over – also in the U.K. Buyers of linen bedding accounts for a large market today.
