  1. Basic Difference Between Public and Private Locating Services For a long time, most individuals including the ones who are working for the public/private locating industry did not have a clear idea on the actual differences in between public and private locating services. This may sound a bit embarrassing for the workers, but you also need to acknowledge the fact it is a complicated thing and varies from one state to another (also from municipality to municipality). The private service providers are the younger sibling to the public locating services, but what people do not realize is that there are lot more buried private utilities than public ones. As a construction industry grows bigger and requires lot more infrastructure maintenance than before, it is usually seen that private underground utility contractors in Northern California or any other location become more useful.

  2. The 811 call needs to be done initially as it is the utility damage prevention. It is a must before any excavation task begins. All the facility managers/owners should be a part of the state’s “one call” system. It is a zero-charge service that guarantees that locate notices are distributed across all the underground utility owners with provisions allocated to the service meter. However, often it is seen that private utilities go beyond the service meter that are not marked and are still pose some kind of risk to the field worker as well as the excavator. Having sufficient knowledge on where these private utility items may be buried is a crucial step for a safe digging process. Public utility lines are placed on what is known as the “Point of Service.” It is accomplished by the owner of the facility and each company needs to accurately define the point to which the ownership ends and where the private service begins. The state law can vary, however, in most cases, the underground facility owners are required to

  3. mark all the private lines as these are his responsibility to own and maintain. The most prominent lines include the sewer and water laterals, power given to the lights, septic systems, and irrigation systems. Common places for private utilities include schools and campuses, apartment complexes, hospitals, government centers, military offices, and solar and wind farms. While public underground utility contractors in Northern Californiaor any other location for that matter usually work on the same well-established guidelines, the guidelines used by private services differ for each industry.
