  1. Depression: 6 Ways to Cope Depression is a serious mental illness that affects millions of people on daily. Individuals with this common disorder are more likely to lose their jobs, have a hard time finding employment, commit suicide and use illegal substances to self medicate. The statistics behind this mental disorder are astounding, but there are things that people with depression can do that might help them with their symptoms. Most people suffering with this mental disorder do not want to feel this way. Counselling remains a popular option, but there are a few things that can help individuals that are waiting on their first counselling appointment as well. Hotlines Hotlines are a great tool that most people are too embarrassed to use. There is no need to feel embarrassed in calling a suicide hotline or seeking help from a hotline. The people that answer the phone are specially trained to help individuals during their most vulnerable moments. These people can listen to problems, help find solutions, and they can provide valuable tips for self help options. Self-care The importance of self-care cannot be minimised. Often, those with this mental disorder find it difficult to find the motivation to get out of bed in the morning, let alone to take a shower, do their nails or brush their teeth. Sometimes, one must make themselves get out of bed and complete their usual, daily tasks. Remember, just a shower and a brief time spent brushing teeth is still self-care. No matter how big or small, progress is still progress. Exercise Numerous studies have revealed that exercise can help beat symptoms of depression, especially when it is outside. This remains an effective treatment for common disorders, such as Seasonal Affective Disorder, and it can help lesson the symptoms of depression. Take a brisk walk around the block or go for a hike. If the mere thought of that seems overwhelming, a counsellor recommends that starting off small might be the way to go. Instead of going for a two-mile hike, start by getting dressed and sitting on the porch for a little bit. The next day, walk down the street and back. Doing something is always better than doing nothing. Counselling Counselling can appropriately diagnose this disorder, they can recommend treatment options that do not involve medication, and they can prescribe medication if needed. If a counsellor is not qualified to prescribe medication, they can often refer clients to

Depression is a serious mental illness that is responsible for a multitude of things, from poor dental hygiene to suicide. It should never be taken lightly, no matter how well a person may seem. If a loved one is suffering, remember these tips to get them the help that they need. If an individual is suffering, try these tips to help get started down the path to feeling better. This might be a mental illness, but it doesn’t have to control one’s entire life.
