  2. Java Technology Java is recognised as both a platform and a programming language. www.lset.uk

  3. The Java programming language first came into existence in 1995. It is a high-level and object-oriented language. Inception of the Programming Language www.lset.uk

  4. A Platform is the software and hardware environment in which a program could be executed. A Java platform is responsible for running Java applications. What is a Platform? www.lset.uk

  5. Java Platform • The Java platform is a software-only platform that works on top of other platforms. • A Java platform consists of Java Virtual Machine (JVM) and a set of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). • The JVM is responsible for running compiled Java programs. • The JVM is implemented in the software on top of an actual host platform. • JVM uses a machine language known as the Java bytecode. www.lset.uk

  6. JAVA API The Java API has a huge collection of ready-made software components. This makes the job of the programmer easier. Java API is grouped into libraries of relating interfaces and classes. For example; the Collection API gives us the most commonly utilised data structures. www.lset.uk

  7. Java Platform Specifications There are three different platforms for Java Java Standard Edition Java Enterprise Edition Java Platforms Java Micro Edition www.lset.uk

  8. Java Standard Edition This edition of Java is mainly platform specified and used in the development of desktop applications. It is considered the foundation for developing Java applications. It consists of a set of Java standard libraries.

  9. Java Enterprise Edition This edition of the Java platform is responsible for providing APIs and the runtime environment for the development of enterprise applications. It is a subset of the Java Standard Edition. We can use JSE APIs in any JEE application.

  10. Java Micro Edition This edition of the Java platform is responsible for the development and deployment of portable code mobile and embedded devices. Formerly, it was known as the Java 2 Platform.
