  1. How to extend Wi-Fi to the other side of my house?

  2. As a leading fibre and wireless broadband provider we are always keen to help our customers get the best out of their broadband. • After all, there is little point in our providing high speed broadband connections and delivering 10GBpS to your router if your Wi-Fi doesn’t reach your conference room. So how can you ensure that your Wi-Fi doesn’t let you down? • The most important thing to do is position your router correctly. It needs to be out in the open and reasonably high up.

  3. If your router is on the floor the signal will be fantastic for the dust mites in the carpet, but will not be great for people working at desk height, and you can completely forget about connecting upstairs. • You should also position the router as centrally as you can, so that the signal is not concentrated at one side of the building. • It is also important that you keep the router away from appliances that can interfere with the signal too.

  4. Televisions are a particular problem, so it is better to have your router in a TV free room. Certainly you should never place your router next to or behind a television. • If your router is well situated but your Wi-Fi is still weak you may want to consider a new router. • As with all technology routers are never completely future proof and they will become less effective over time.

  5. If you are experiencing Wi-Fi issues and your router is more than five years old we would definitely suggest that you upgrade the hardware. • Sometimes though there can be problems that are more to do with the environment than the equipment. • If you are in an old building with thick walls it may simply be that the Wi-Fi signal simply cannot penetrate into particular parts of the house. • In these cases you may wish to invest in either a “Mesh Network” or powerline connectors.

  6. A Mesh network boosts the power of your Wi-Fi signal by creating a network of two or more routers. • You connect the first of these to your existing router, which can then connect wirelessly to a second or even third router which then re-broadcasts the signal. • These are very effective but sometimes cannot get around the “impenetrable wall problem”. • When there is a problem with a physical obstruction to the signal power line connectors may be more useful.

  7. Power line connectors are actually rather low-tech, and are mostly being replaced by the wireless mesh networks, but they are perfect when wireless signals are blocked because they connect to each other using the power lines already in your house. • Basically, the base unit plugs into a socket near your router and is connected to it by an old fashioned Ethernet cable – usually supplied with the plug. • This then sends information from your router through your power lines to one or more receiver plugs in rooms where the router’s signal is weak. • These plugs can then either re-broadcast the Wi-Fi or can connect to your device by another Ethernet cable.

  8. So there is no need to settle for bad Wi-Fi. As a wireless broadband provider we are happy to advise our clients on other ways they can improve their connectivity and Wi-Fi strength, so why not call us and find out how we can improve your broadband connections and get the best internet possible.
