What is Specific Phobia? Specific Phobia is a type of anxiety disorder where an individual experiences an intense, irrational fear of a particular object, situation, or scenario even though it poses little or no real danger. This fear is persistent, often long-term, and may cause undue distress or interfering behavior when the feared object or situation is anticipated or encountered. PITCH DECK
Common Types of Specific Phobias Some of the common triggers or phobia types include: Animals or insects — e.g. spiders, snakes, dogs. Natural environment — e.g. heights, storms, water, darkness. Blood / injections / injuries — fear of blood, needles, medical procedures, injury, or seeing wounds. Situational phobias — such as fear of flying, elevators, enclosed spaces, bridges, driving, or public transport. Other phobias — which might include fear of choking, vomiting, loud noises, certain situations or unusual objects.
Signs & Symptoms When someone has a specific phobia, they may experience: Immediate, intense fear or anxiety when exposed to or even thinking about the feared object/situation. Physical reactions: increased heart rate, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea, muscle tension. Psychological/emotional symptoms: overwhelming dread, panic, fear of losing control, persistent worry about encountering the fear‑trigger. Behavioural responses: active avoidance of feared objects/situations; for example, avoiding travel if afraid of flying, avoiding medical appointments if fear of needles; or enduring the situation with extreme distress.
