  2. Index • Introduction • Procedure • Types • Benefits • Risk • Recovery • About Meddco.

  3. Introduction • Hemiglossectomy is an operation to remove part of the tongue and adjacent tissues. • At the same time, reconstructive surgery is performed to restore normal appearance and speech. • A tracheostomy may be performed to assist breathing postoperatively, and a skin graft may be needed to replace removed tissue.

  4. Procedure • Glossectomy is a term used to describe a family of surgical procedures resulting in resection of the tongue. While there are many classifications, glossectomy is commonly classified by the laterality (left, right, or midline) and the proportion of tongue removed.

  5. Types • The types of glossectomy are:  • Partial glossectomy: Part of the tongue is removed. • Hemi glossectomy: One side of the tongue is removed, leaving the other side intact. • Total glossectomy: The whole tongue is removed.

  6. Benefits • If tumor is located on the tongue, a tongue resection may be necessary. • Depending on the size of the tumor, a partial resection or hemiglossectomy is performed. • This means that parts or half of the tongue are resected. • A glossectomy is the surgery done to remove part of or all of the tongue. • It can be used to treat cancers of the tongue, some oral cavity (inside the mouth) and throat cancers.

  7. Risk • Bleeding. • Hematoma. • Infection. • Salivary fistula . • Airway blockages. • Having a hard time swallowing. • Aspiration. • Pneumonia. • Weight loss.

  8. Recovery • Recovery from a glossectomy depends on the type of surgery you have had. Often, a 7-10 day hospital stay is needed. • A temporary or permanent feeding tube may be needed for nutrition, during and after the healing process. • The effects on your speech will depend on how much of your tongue has been removed. It can take a few months for your tongue to recover. • With exercises and careful attention to speech, most people find they can be clearly understood when talking and can also manage to use the telephone well.
