  1. Article 1: Medicaldevicestore.com CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS Surgical instruments are a doctor’s lifeline and help in maintaining yours too. What surgical instruments is to Doctor is what a Day is to Night… inseparable! We are talking about the maintenance of these instruments to ensure safety and hygiene all throughout the surgical process. When you check a surgical instrument make sure it is vital to access all the parts to ensure that it is clean. Hard to reach areas is often missed where dirt may be trapped. There are some instruments which are movable and hence require dismantling before cleaning. Every instrument is different from the other in terms of its size, type, function and therefore proper care should be taken to clean them in a different and specified manner. To do this, a good starting point of the cleaning process is to determine if any corrosion has occurred unless you want any kind of infection spreading in your vital organs during the surgery. Dirt and contaminants lead to corrosion of an instrument. Corrosion often means that the surface of the surgical instrument becomes uneven and therefore easily collects dirt. Overall the lifeline of these instruments is heavily impacted. A long life is of paramount importance as it is beneficial for both the environment and your overall state of the economy. If you are using any sort of machinery to clean them then just follow the procedure and forget the rest but the real problem arises when you have to do it manually. Certain types of instrument are so delicate to be handled and that is where the real deal lies. First thing first clean it immediately after use so as to eliminate any risk of contamination prima facie. Do not absolutely allow any kind of body fluid such as blood, bile, etc. to get deposited on it, as they are hard to cleanse if they dry up. Simple steps first, start off by rinsing them in cold water and then dipping them in a solution such as 3E-Zyme which is effective against all kinds of residues. Then scrub the instruments with a nylon brush and rinse with a syringe to ensure all the narrow cavities and places are reached. Also, there should be instructions from the manufacturer on what type of disinfectants and cleaning agents to use and it is important to follow the exact instructions as using the wrong cleaning solution, for example, harsh, abrasive agents or too high alkaline can result in damaging the instrument. The recommended cleaning solution varies on the make of the instrument as different metals react differently with different types of metals hence appropriate care is required. This is a prerequisite for any person who is willing to establish a name in the industry as many lives are directly and indirectly dependent on how a doctor/paramedic chooses to deal with their instruments. Any alteration or disregard in this manner can lead to severe implications and hence puts a patient’s future life in jeopardy. So be alert.
