  1. Temperature • Animals in the stream can only tolerate a certain temperature of water at different stages of their life cycles. • Sagehen Creek is between 5-13 C or 41-55.4 F. This temperature range supports the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, Piute Sculpin, Stoneflies, and Caddisflies. A Healthy Stream How can you tell if a stream is healthy? You can tell by taking some tests. Three items that test the health of the stream are temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen. Temperature measures the warmth or coolness of the water. pH tests whether the water is basic or acidic. Dissolved oxygen checks the percentage of oxygen in the water available for aquatic life to breathe. As you read on, you will see how healthy Sagehen Creek is. Dissolved Oxygen pH • Plants process the air outside of the stream and introduce oxygen into the stream through their roots. Dissolved oxygen can also enter the stream through fast moving water that flows over rocks. • The trout, sculpin, caddisflies, and stoneflies in this stream need a higher level of dissolved oxygen to breathe. When the stream temperature goes up, it holds less oxygen. • Without high levels of dissolved oxygen aquatic life starts to die. • pH is important for aquatic life. If the water in the stream is too acidic or too basic, it will harm aquatic life. The desired range is between 6.5 and 8.2. Sagehen Creek is about a 6.5. • Rocks that get broken down and enter the stream affect pH, which determines how acidic or basic the water is.
