  1. Steer/Heifer Information Humble/Harris Co./HLSR Kingwood FFA

  2. Humble I.S.D. Steers • Bought in May (approximate cost of $850) • Selected (obtained by students) in early July • Selection is a ‘lottery style’ • Sold in March * at the Humble I.S.D. auction or pre-sale *Subject to change.

  3. Selection meeting will be held before animals are selected in July • Selection meeting will cover feeding, selecting, and managing a steer project • Meeting will be Humble ISD specific

  4. Forms Required Before Purchase: • Sponsorship form • Facility Rules (and $60 per animal) • W-9 Form • Entry Form

  5. Harris County Steers • Selected and bought between May-June (approximate cost of $800+) • Purchase steers from independent breeders not centrally bought by Harris Co • Tags must be ordered by May 1st ($6/each) • Steer validation occurs in late June in Crosby • Steer entry ($25) is due in mid September • Shown and sold in early to mid October (15th)

  6. HLSR Steers • Selected and bought between May-June (approximate cost of $800+) • Purchase steers from independent breeders not centrally bought by HLSR • Tags must be ordered by May 1st ($6/each)* • Steer validation occurs in late June in Crosby • Steer entry ($25) is due in mid September • Shown and sold in early to Late February

  7. Steers need to be 16-20 months of age at show • A list of breeders may be obtained by Mr. Morris • Steers are ‘slicked’ at show

  8. Heifers (HLSR, Harris, Jackpot) • Heifers are bought from independent breeders • Heifers may have a range in age (9 mo.-2yrs) • Only specified breeds are allowed • Animals must be pure-bred and have registry papers • The exhibitor must be the owner and primary caretaker of the animal • Projects may be shown at multiple shows • No junior auction at HLSR for heifers

  9. Exhibitors may only show one heifer and one steer • Feeding period begins June 30th • Heifers must leave the barn by March
