GENERATION Y & THE BOOMERS: GENERATION Y • Demographics: 75 Million between 12 and 25; children of boomers, 38% non-white. • Characteristics: Techno-savvy; connected 24/7; self-confident; optimistic; independent; goal-oriented; success driven; global- civic and community-minded; entrepreneurial. • Beliefs: Education is good; integrity is admirable; parents are role models. • Defining life experiences: Grew up basking in the “Decade of the Child”/children on a pedestal; most hovered over; came of age during time of incredible change. • Impact of technological advancement: Never experienced life without computers; all information is only a click away. • At work: Work well with friends and on teams; love a challenge; seek to make a difference; comfortable with speed and change; impatient; partner well with mentors; value guidance; expect respect. • First generation whose health may not be as good as their parents.

THE GRAYING OF AMERICA • Boomers (born between 1946 & 1964) represent 27.5% of the population and 2.1 trillion in annual spending. • First boomer turns 60 in 2006 and preoccupation with midlife will become national obsession. • Critical issues for boomers as they face middle age: individual health and longevity; financial security; retirement; family; desire to make a difference; search for meaning. • Many over 50 consider middle age a new start. Fewer than 20% say they will stop working altogether. Boomers tend to re-invent each life transition they go through: 81% of those planning to retire expect to continue to learn, 70% to try new things; 65% to travel and 63% to spend time on new hobby of interest.

FROM DIVERSITY TO EMBRACING DIFFERENCES • The concept of diversity itself is becoming diversified – it’s not just about race, it’s about income, sexual orientation, faith. • Half of the U.S. population growth is due to immigration. • Attitudes towards programs and philanthropy are affected by culture. • While we are unquestionably more diverse, we remain highly segregated: gated communities; affinity groups / housing on campuses.
