  1. Loving God through the Renewal of Your Mind Romans 12:1-2

  2. Romans 12:1-2 • I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

  3. Question According to Romans 12:2, where does transformation begin?

  5. Renew How is my mind renewed? • To make like new • A complete change for the better • A renovation

  6. Mind Renewal • God the Holy Spirit changes our thinking, attitudes, and perspective on life (worldview) as we study and meditate upon: • The God of the Bible • The Word of God

  7. Intellectual Love • Jesus said unto him, • Thou shalt lovethe Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. Mt. 22:37, Mk 12:30, Luke 10:27

  8. Where you a meet a guy who expresses a love for soccer, so you start asking him questions and… Imagine a Scenario

  9. Intellectual Love for God • Anti-Intellectual Bias in Conservative Christianity (Fundamentalism) • Intellectuals are “geeks” (theologians) • Intellectuals are perceived to be “liberal” in morals and political leanings • Fundamentalism was birthed out of a reaction to liberal theologians

  10. #1 Pointless • Without the Holy Spirit’s divine PRESENCE the study of the Bible is POINTLESS. • Without the Holy Spirit, authentic transformation is NOT possible. • See Titus 3:5 (renewing)

  11. Titus 3:5 Same renew as Romans 12:2 PRAY to the Holy Spirit for help. • Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

  12. 1 Corinthians 2:14 Unless you are born-again, you cannot love God with your mind. • But the natural man [mind] receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

  13. 2 Corinthians 4:4 • In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, • lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

  14. Romans 8:7 • Because the carnal mind is enmity [hostile] against [toward] God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

  15. #2 Pattern • We need to follow the pattern of our Lord and His disciples. • The Lord Jesus Christ • The Early Church • The Bereans of Acts 17

  16. Pattern Luke 2 v.40 and v. 52

  17. First Church They studied what the apostles taught Acts 2:42 • And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine [teaching].

  18. Acts 17:11 • These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, • and searched the scriptures

  19. #3 Preparation Intellectual love is preparation for a war of words and ideas. 2 Corinthians 10:4-5

  20. 2 Corinthians 10:4 • For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; • Intellectual strong holds • Secular Worldviews • False Religions

  21. 2 Corinthians 10:5 • Casting down [destroy] imaginations [arguments], • and every high thing [opinion] that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, • and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

  22. 1 Peter 1:13 • In the NT, “girded loins” signified that a man was ready for service or heavy battle. • Tyndale Bible Dictionary • Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

  23. Application Equipping yourself to defend Christianity against cults and false religions is just as much worship (an expression of love) as building a porch for a widow. Kingdom of the Cults by Walter Martin and Ravi Zacharias is a great book!

  24. Apologetics apologetics engages the mind • But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer [apologia] to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: 1 Peter 3:5

  25. Imagine a scenario where a Christian expresses a love for the Bible and a skeptic/unbeliever says, “Well for me, I could never get over the fact that the church picked the books they liked for the Bible and did not publish everything that was written about Christ’s life.” How was the cannon formed?

  26. #4 Passion • Intellectual love ONLY occurs when truth moves the emotions. • If the study of God does NOT change me, we are back to P#1—what is the point?

  27. #5 Pure Mind NOT • Authentic Intellectual Love • (loving God with my mind, through study) • directly contributes to the Spirit’s sanctifying work in my life.

  28. Psalm 119:11 Why? • Thy word have I hid in mine heart, • that I might not sin against thee.

  29. Pure Music Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. Colossians 3:16

  30. “But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. ” (Matthew 15:18)

  31. #6 Prove Archaic: learn or find out • be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that • ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

  32. Why do I need to prove the will of God? Because of the choices I have. See Romans 14:5

  33. Romans 14:5 Dealing with Gray Area Issues • One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. • Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.

  34. #7 Plan Loving God with your mind will not happen without a plan.

  35. These [Bereans] were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. Acts 17:11 What is your plan?

  36. #8 Personal Library • Every Christian family should be developing a personal Christian library: • Study Bibles, Bible Dictionary • Theology Book • Apologetics Book • Christian Biographies • Devotional Books

  37. www.blueletterbible.org Is a FREE website you can use to obtain material.

  38. Application What about gifts for birthdays, graduation, Father’s or Mother’s Day and Christmas that make a difference in the world for the cause of Christ? May I suggest: The Popular Encyclopedia of Apologetics by Ed Hindson and Ergun Caner?

  39. #9 Present Progressive Verb Tense • Romans 12:2 • be ye transformed by the renewingof your mind,

  40. #10 Purpose (ultimate) • Romans 12:2 • And be not conformed to this world: • but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, • that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
