La tecnica Nishiki-e usata da Ligustro consiste nellu2019avere, per ogni stampa, molti legni incisi che vengono poi stampati singolarmente. Paradossalmente la xilografia, tecnica di incisione che consiste nello scavare con sgorbie la matrice in legno e al pari delle altre tecniche di stampa come il bulino, lu2019acquaforte, la litografia, u00e8 legata alla pittura, arte maggiore, richiede la stessa u201cprimitivau201d manualitu00e0 che, nella lavorazione, esigono i materiali delle scultura, il marmo, la pietra e il legno. u00c8 pur vero che la xilografia, nella sua storia multiforme, dai primi legni gotici alla Grande e Piccola Passione di Albrecht Durer, fino ai legni di Edvard Munch, Felix Vallonton e Eric Gill nel Novecento, ha cambiato sovente statuto. In Occidente molti artisti non incidevano i loro legni ed erano semplicemente pittori che passavano il disegno allu2019incisione: anche in Giappone, sebbene i pittori della scuola Ukiyo-e si limitassero a disegnare la stampa, alcuni (e tra questi KatsushikaHokusai) avevano avuto un apprendistato di incisori. La xilografia policroma, poco praticata in Occidente rispetto al bianco e nero fino agli Espressionisti (come Ernest Ludwig Kirchner, Eric Heckel e Otto Mueller), i quali si dedicarono a questo linguaggio u2013 anche nellu2019illustrazione di libri u2013 con esisti altissimi, al pari della loro pittura, u00e8 stata invece un genere che ha raggiunto il livello massimo di qualitu00e0 estetica e diffusione nella sua storia proprio in Giappone durante lu2019epoca Tokugawa, dal 1658 al 1868. Le piu00f9 antiche xilografie da matrici di legno, conosciute nel mondo, rimangono ancor oggi quelle scoperte nel 1908 da Aurel Stein nella grotta dei Mille Buddha di Tunhuang, allu2019estremo confine occidentale della Cina: sono tutte immagini buddiste e le piu00f9 antiche accompagnano la traduzione cinese di un Sutra datato al 868 dopo Cristo. Altre xilografie presenti nella stessa grotta risalgono al 947 e 983 della nostra era ed assegnano alla Cina il primato dellu2019invenzione di questa tecnica a stampa che nessuno contesta. Le piu00f9 antiche xilografie stampate in due e tre colori, con i pigmenti ad olio, sono datate in Italia e Germania agli inizi del sedicesimo secolo, conosciute con il nome di stampa a u201cchiaroscurou201d e portano il nome di autori famosi come il celebre pitture senese Domenico Beccafumi e meno noti come Antonio da Trento. Si discute ancora oggi se lu2019origine della xilografia policroma in Cina possa essere stata determinata dalla conoscenza di queste stampe occidentali, ivi portate dai Gesuiti come ipotizzava E. F. Strange nel 1904, oppure se, come appare piu00f9 probabile, i cinesi siano pervenuti a questa tecnica attraverso lu2019evoluzione progressiva del sistema di stampa, dopo una fase di colorazione a mano, documentata anche nelle immagini buddiste di Tunhuang e dal fatto che, durante la dinastia Tang, siano stati realizzati decori con procedimento di stampa a matrice in legno, in tessuti colorati di questo periodo. In epoca moderna lu2019uso della xilografia ha trovato largo impiego, sia in Europa che in Estremo Oriente, nella illustrazione di testi religiosi e profani; tra le piu00f9 antiche in Cina si ricordano quelle policrome del libro Shih Chu Chai Shu hua pu2019u, 1625, (uso il vecchio sistema di traslitterazione perchu00e9 cosu00ec u00e8 riportato nella bibliografia occidentale), e del notissimo manuale di pittura Chieh Tzu Yuan (Il giardino del seme di senape), diffuso in diverse edizioni e che costituu00ec il testo base per il training dei pittori cinesi prima e giapponesi poi. Lu2019uso della stampa xilografica arrivu00f2 al Giappone dalla Cina, ma come tutti gli studiosi sono concordi nel riconoscere, solo nel Giappone dellu2019epoca Tokugawa conobbe uno sviluppo senza pari a partire da Hishikawa Moronubu, il primo vero print designer della scuola Ukiyo-e, che nel 1658 illustru00f2 il libro Kamo no Chomei Hoojokisho, unu2019epitome buddista. Lu2019UKIYO-E E Lu2019ARTE MODERNA Se mi sono dilungato un pou2019 sulla storia delle origini della xilografia u00e8 perchu00e9 volevo ricordare come questa tecnica, di cui Ligustro puu00f2 essere considerato uno dei maggiori maestri viventi, viene da lontano ed u00e8 strettamente connessa alla diffusione dellu2019immagine attraverso la stampa; vanta insomma ascendenti nobili, anche se meno millenari, della sorella maggiore pittura. Il grande merito della scuola Ukiyo-e fu quello di finalizzare la xilografia non piu00f9 allu2019iconografia della religione buddista, ma allu2019illustrazione di storie e temi profani, in rapporto diretto con i romanzi della letteratura contemporanea di scrittori quali Ihara Saikaku e il drammaturgo Chikamatsu Monzaemon; una letteratura che, dalla metu00e0 del 1600 in poi, ha descritto il mondo, la cultura e la vita della nascente societu00e0 urbana a Edo ed Osaka, composta di mercanti, artigiani, samurai, nei quartieri in cui si trovavano anche i teatri del Kabuki e le case delle cortigiane, come lo Shin Yoshiwara. Una cultura dunque, a suo modo, borghese, rispetto a quella precedente aristocratica della corte imperiale a Kyoto, e nei centri dei signori feudali delle diverse regioni. Nel campo della xilografia i pittori dellu2019Ukiyo-e hanno realizzato, nei quasi trecento anni di storia di questa cultura, opere che non solo stanno al pari con quelle dei piu00f9 grandi maestri europei degli stessi secoli, ma che sono state anche determinanti per la formazione dellu2019arte moderna; u00e8 noto infatti quanto le figure di bijin(immagini di belle donne), di Kitagawa Utamaro e Hosoda Eishi abbiano influenzato un artista come Touluse Lautrec nei suoi manifesti sulle attrici Jane Avril e May Belfort, o come le u201cveduteu201d di Ando Hiroshige siano state decisive nella formazione dellu2019idea di paesaggio in Vincent Van Gogh, come attestano le u201ccopieu201d che il pittore olandese realizzu00f2 da La pioggia sul ponte di Ohashi e Susino fiorito a Kameido, della serie Meisho Edo hyakkei (Le cento vedute di Edo), 1856 u2013 1858, cosu00ec come oggi viene riconosciuto in tutti i libri sul Japonismo. Lu2019influsso della xilografia giapponese nel formarsi nella pittura impressionista e post-impressionista u00e8 stato dunque cosu00ec profondo, al pari di quello della scultura africana nella genesi del Cubismo, che non si potrebbe scrivere una storia dellu2019arte moderna senza parlarne. Tali considerazioni dovevano essere premesse al momento di analizzare le xilografie di Ligustro; queste opere sarebbero infatti incomprensibili se non si tenesse conto che il suo lavoro u00e8 nato da una precisa u201crivisitazioneu201d della stampa Ukiyo-e . Ligustro u00e8 giunto abbastanza tardi, nella sua vita, alla xilografia; da quanto egli mi racconta ha cominciato ad incidere sul legno di u201ctestau201d, al modo occidentale antico, nel 1983, in etu00e0 giu00e0 matura. In precedenza, agli inizi degli anni Ottanta, Ligustro aveva realizzato una serie di pastelli a gessetto e acquarelli, vedute di paesaggi liguri, nature morte con marine sullo sfondo, denotando una notevole abilitu00e0 ed uno spiccato carattere creativo; a riguardarle oggi sono opere che denotano, nella pienezza della luce, un qualche legame con il u201cluminismou201c della pittura ligure divisionista degli inizi del Novecento (corrono alla mente certi paesaggi rivieraschi di Rubaldo Morello). Poi la folgorazione: il pittore vede, a Genova, le stampe dellu2019Ukiyo-e e la pittura giapponese. La scoperta u00e8 testimoniata da una serie di fogli, tra il 1985 e il 1986, esercizi u2013 come egli li chiama u2013 di pittura a solo inchiostro di china su carta di fibra vegetale, pennellate acquose e rapide, studi di passeri, epidendri e bambu00f9, un gallo con pochi tocchi di colore, degli ulivi con i rialzi a biacca. Ed u00e8 gia una rottura con la tradizione occidentale, che concepisce il disegno come metodo u201cdescrittivou201d di analisi della realtu00e0, secondo fasi successive dallu2019u201dabbozzou201d allu2019u201dopera finitau201d. In questi fogli di Ligustro, seguendo lo spirito della pittura Nanga, lu2019immagine non deve nascere dalla speculazione descrittiva dellu2019osservazione, quanto invece dal porsi interiormente in rapporto con la cosa vista. u201c Se vuoi dipingere il bambu00f9 non devi disegnarlo: poniti di fronte ad esso e quando lo sentirai nel cuore allora, e solo allora, la tua mano potru00e0 disegnarlou201d: cosu00ec ha scritto un pittore cinese dellu2019epoca Qing, e cosu00ec deve aver inteso fare Ligustro. LA TECNICA DI LIGUSTRO Al 1985 risalgono anche le prime prove xilografiche dellu2019artista; una veduta dei tetti di Oneglia, con un fiore in primo piano e il grande cerchio del sole sullo sfondo; una barca con il marinaio al timone su una nave curvo, e nuovamente lu2019astro che tramonta con la sua scia riflessa sullu2019acqua. Si tratta di xilo su legno di u201ctestau201d, come si u00e8 detto, e non di u201cfilou201d, come avviene comunemente nella stampa giapponese e come il Ligustro prenderu00e0 a fare successivamente. Ma da queste prime, essenziali e quasi scarne prove, alle ricche stampe u201cbroccatou201d (Nishiki-e) negli anni Novanta la corsa saru00e0 breve. Ligustro, come tutti i geniali autodidatti, assumeru00e0 gli elementi della stampa giapponese rielaborandoli con una sua personale tecnica; cosu00ec si fabbricheru00e0 degli strumenti propri al fine di ottenere gli effetti desiderati. Il baren, o tampone dischetto per premere il foglio sulla matrice in legno, di sughero a diametri varianti, e non di corda; il kento, o registro marginale sulle matrici, a modulo variabile, unu2019idea questa che solo a prima vista pare banale u2013 come tutte le idee innovative u2013 che il nostro deve avere mutato dalle vecchie cassette a regolo dei caratteri tipografici, ma che gli permette di fatto di realizzare anche lu2019uso di decine e decine di matrici sullo stesso foglio senza ricorrere allu2019accumulo delle tavolette di legno. Cosu00ec dalle prime prove di policromia, rabeschi di limoni in giallo, oro, verde e violetto, Ligustro u00e8 giunto al suo primo piccolo capolavoro xilografico, Il mio mondo, 1989, un foglio di piu00f9 di cinquanta centimetri, in cui ha dispiegato tutte le magie della tecnica Nishiki-e; il gofun, lu2019uso della polvere di conchiglia nel pigmento, il karazuri, tecnica di stampa per impressione a secco, con effetti di rilievo, il sabi-bori, tecnica di stampa che evidenzia le pennellate, il bokashi, la gradazione del colore, e si veda a questo proposito il prezioso glossarietto di Fiamma del Gaizo in fondo al catalogo alla recente mostra Arte xilografica giapponese dei secoli XVIII u2013 XX, per il decennale del Centro Studi du2019Arte Estremo u2013 Orientale di Bologna. Durante lu2019ultimo decennio la creativa vena xilografica di Ligustro si u00e8 sviluppata ampiamente: da prove preziose come Il sogno di Chuang Tse: La farfalla, un foglio accompagnato dalla calligrafia u201cNulla si sa e tutto si immaginau201d, che evoca stilisticamente tanta grafica Decu00f2, alla prima serie dei tre diversi u201cstatiu201d di Jneja, con le vedute del golfo di Imperia in tre momenti del corso del sole, dallu2019alba alla notte. Questa attenzione di Ligustro alla diversa luce del giorno, intesa come intonazione di cromie sullo stesso disegno, ritorna, mi sembra, anche in altre serie di varianti: Il circo, del 1998, e la Finestra del pittore dello stesso anno. Si tratta di grandi fogli, di sessanta per quaranta centimetri, in cui egli dispiega tutta la sua grande abilitu00e0 di incisore e stampatore u2013 si ricordi che in Giappone non era la stessa persona a fare queste due operazioni u2013 e soprattutto la sua genuina natura di poeta dellu2019immagine. Sono, queste stampe di Ligustro, come anche Sole nella rete, 1998, Palloncini, 1998, Varco nel cielo, 1999, La danza del sole e Malinconica attesa, 2000, degli esempi potenti di come la xilografia, in questu2019epoca di arte concettuale e computerizzata, non sia morta; di quanto lu2019immaginazione, la mano paziente dellu2019uomo possano dare allu2019espressione delle figure del mondo. Vi u00e8 infine quella stampa che io preferisco, Geisha alla finestra con veduta di Oneglia, 1998, che a me pare uno dei piccoli capolavori della xilografia del Novecento e che sintetizza in unu2019immagine alcuni dei motivi centrali della nostra cultura figurativa: lu2019immagine della donna di spalle mentre si pettina, la finestra sul golfo con la luna, il fiore in primo piano e la quinta di base, il paravento di glicini, con la lucertola che pare mirare la luna argentata. Qui si assiste, nella piena autonomia dellu2019illustratore u2013 intendo illustrazione nel senso piu00f9 alto u2013 a tutta una serie di u201crichiami visiviu201d, da Utamaro a Matisse, dai Nabis allu2019Art decu00f2; perchu00e9 questa u00e8 stata la magia di Ligustro che, nel momento in cui egli voleva u201crifareu201d lu2019Ukiyo-e, egli ha fatto se stesso, e tutte le suggestioni tecniche che andavano a confluire nella sua abilissima perizia manuale, dalle raffinatezze dei surimono allu2019eleganza del Nishiki-e, si sono piegate allu2019immaginazione di un uomo dei nostri giorni. LIGUSTRO E I SUOI MODELLI GIAPPONESI Volendo percorrere, se puu00f2 servire, la strada dellu2019analisi stilistica, le xilografie di Ligustro non sono dunque vicine a quelle dei maestri dellu2019epoca du2019oro dellu2019Ukiyo-e (Harunobu, Utamaro, Kiyonaga), cui egli ha guardato ed ha reso omaggio come nella stampa Aragosta, 1997, come ha fatto con Hiroshige; sono invece vicine a quelle di outsider della xilografia, come Paul Jacoulet, ed ai maestri giapponesi del Novecento, quali Yamamoto Shoun (1870 u2013 1965), con quei tipici riquadri floreali intorno ai ritratti femminili, KawaseHasui (1883 u2013 1957), quando disegna fiori, come in Iris (1929), e non paesaggi, infine YamamuraKoka (1885 u2013 1942), artisti tutti questi che declinarono la traditio dellu2019Ukiyo-e nella modernitu00e0. E un altro piccolo gioiello di Ligustro, che u00e8 il ritratto di Lindasay Kemp in Onnagata, (1992), ci conferma questa sua vocazione verso i maestri tra le due guerre, una vocazione certo non leziosa ma neppure severa, quanto invece fantasiosa. Ecco, nellu2019uscire dallo studio di Ligustro dopo la mia visita, vedo nello scaffale dei suoi libri piu00f9 cari le monografie di Seraut, Touluse Lautrec, il Doganiere Rousseau, ma anche Folon, e penso che mai, come nella xilografia, la grande arte del disegno si u00e8 sposata con la fatica manuale, lo scavare dellu2019intagliatore. Ligustro mi sorride e mi racconta come fa a procurarsi quella polvere, mica perlacea di conchiglia, che rende cosu00ec preziose le sue stampe, dalla Corea; solo ora capisco perchu00e9 questi fogli hanno cosu00ec entusiasmato il nostro comune amico e maestro Jack Hillier, al quale la critica moderna dellu2019Ukiyo-e deve tanto: u201cYour printis so enchanting, so exquisitely cut and printed, that i do not think anything i can teach you (u2026), You have produced something so personal and original, that it might even harm your work if you had regular instructions which might tend to cramp your styleu201d, (da una lettera di Hillier a Ligustro del 10 Luglio 1987). Durante una lunga convalescenza, a seguito di una malattia cardiaca, nel 1972 egli cominciu00f2 ad interessarsi alla pittura ad olio, ma non trovu00f2 in tale tecnica piena soddisfazione. Piu00f9 tardi si perfezionu00f2 nel pastello, ma anche questa tecnica non realizzu00f2 le sue aspettative: pur tuttavia fu proprio il pastello che lo portu00f2 ad uno studio approfondito di moltissime qualitu00e0 di carta. Furono, piu00f9 di ogni altra cosa, la scoperta delle sorprendenti qualitu00e0 delle carte giapponesi fatte ancora a mano, che condussero u201cLigustrou201d allu2019antica grafica giapponese. Abbastanza repentinamente, trovu00f2 che non solo era attratto, ma particolarmente portato a cimentarsi nellu2019incisione dei blocchi dei legni adatti con il fine di stampare nello stile u201cNISHIKI-Eu201d (il coloratissimo stile detto u201cBroccatou201d). Ma Ligustro aveva altresu00ec un inaspettato talento nel realizzare manualmente questa intricata tecnica orientale. Avendo cosu00ec trovato un mezzo che gli permetteva di esprimersi, imparu00f2 da autodidatta i laboriosi e difficoltosi processi della stampa a colori ed in questa si perfezionu00f2. Numerosi sono stati gli artisti occidentali che hanno tentato di realizzare stampe a colori usando i blocchi di legno incisi. Per esempio Henry Riviere e John Platt, ma nessuno ha raggiunto la maestria di Ligustro, sia nella padronanza della complessitu00e0 tecnica di incisione che in quella della stampa. Tra gli antichi artisti giapponesi, gli esempi piu00f9 eclatanti di questo virtuosismo tecnico furono riservati ad un certo tipo di creazione, usualmente di piccolo formato, denominato u201cSURIMONOu201d (letteralmente: una cosa stampata) ma in effetti era usualmente una stampa commemorativa od un mezzo per porgere auguri ed altresu00ec una pubblicazione per lu2019inaugurazione di un circolo letterario ecc. o semplicemente un mezzo per pubblicare versi. Sorprendentemente, Ligustro Berio, ha seguito i maestri giapponesi, non solo nelle tecniche dellu2019incisione delle tavole a colori, ma anche nel creare xilografie policrome ricche di simbolismo con incorporate poesie (HAIKUu2019, KIOKA) in calligrafia giapponese ed un fantasioso uso du2019immagini, di sigilli incisi a mano. Questi ultimi, possono semplicemente dare u201cNomi allu2019artistau201d od esprimere, con simboli pittorici, buoni auguri di longevitu00e0, felicitu00e0 od altro. Ma la piu00f9 sorprendente dote dellu2019artista u00e8 la sua insuperabile abilitu00e0 nellu2019incidere il legno e nel raggiungere effetti di stampa che competono con il virtuosismo degli abilissimi incisori e stampatori del 1600 u2013 1800 giapponesi. Nessuna riproduzione a colori puu00f2 u201dRendere giustiziau201d allu2019originale, sia per la brillantezza metallica della patina di oro e argento, sia per la superficie trattata con lacca e mica o per la stampa cieca usata per ottenere effetti di rilievo. Il u201cSURIMONOu201d quadrato delle u201cLUCCIOLE E LUNA CRESCENTEu201d du00e0 qualche idea sulla complessitu00e0 della venatura dellu2019oro e dellu2019argento e sulla gradazione del colore nel cielo, dallu2019indaco al lilla, che serve come sfondo alle lucciole, ognuna con il suo alone di argento e di brillante mica. Un altro u201cSURIMONOu201d mostra un ragno su di una ragnatela du2019argento di squisita fragilitu00e0; esausto tra i papaveri in un campo ed uno spaventapasseri, e sul fondo, come avviene spesso nelle stampe di Ligustro, appare un glorioso sole rosso ed immenso. Nella serie di stampe u201cSURIMONOu201d dedicate ai dodici mesi dellu2019anno, Febbraio ci porta lu2019inserzione di un gruppo di anemoni pieni di colore che brillano di rugiada su di un manto nevoso sotto scuri alberi. Sempre nelle opere di Ligustro, cu2018u00e8 questo tipo di inaspettata poesia espressa in incisioni su legno con colori di incredibile raffinatezza. Le sue piu00f9 recenti pubblicazioni sono Japanese Prints and Drawings from the Vever Collection (Sothebyu2019s, 1976) e The Art of Hokusai in Book Illustration (Sothebyu2019s and University of California Press, 1980). tttttt Una lettera di Fukuda Kazuhiko tIn un giorno della prima decade di giugno del 1991, quasi aprissi un piccolo, misterioso recipiente in bambu00f9, schiudevo lu2019uscio dellu2019atelier di Ligustro nella cittu00e0 portuale di Imperia, prossima al confine di stato con la Francia. t tLu2019odore dellu2019inchiostro da stampa e dellu2019acqua salmastra aleggiava nello studio e, come la chiara luce solare dellu2019Europa meridionale si riversu00f2 allu2019interno, dapprima io non scorsi nulla, ma nellu2019aria cantavano, danzavano innumerevoli i colori di xilografie intrise di abbacinanti ori, argenti, rossi, verdi. La xilografia policroma, sorta in Giappone sotto il nome di u201cNishiki-eu201d, u00e8 rinata ad Imperia, ai bordi del Mediterraneo, in forme del tutto nuove. Nelle xilografie di Ligustro non vi u00e8 la poetica amante delle tinte sobrie e del senso della natura alla maniera nipponica, i colori sono invece oltremodo limpidi, vivaci, brillanti: una vera sarabanda cromatica di luce e colore mediterranei. Le goffrature in rilievo, le sfoglie du2019oro e du2019argento non hanno i toni delle u201cstampe di broccatou201d: hanno la beltu00e0 degli arazzi alla Gobelin, densi e sontuosi. Cosu00ec lu2019incisione su legno, che ha varcato i confini (del Giappone), lo spazio ed il tempo, hanno ricevuto ora, dalla mano di Ligustro, un soffio vitale artistico di magnificenza barocca. Le stampe di Ligustro sono un mondo poetico dove la Musa suona lu2019arpa. Osservatene la grazia immediata; non saru00f2 il solo che si inebri di questa pura bellezza. Prendendo a prestito unu2019espressione degli antichi cinesi, queste xilografie sono luoghi ameni di un paese incantato, simposio a base di nettare ineffabilmente limpido.
