  1. Five Common Difficulties with Alcohol Addiction Counseling

  2. As a counselor, your ability to help recovering alcoholics is impacted by their want to change. To rebuild a life, you need to understand the pitfalls. A viable alcohol or drug addiction counselor understands the signs of relapse before they occur. More importantly: They’re well-versed in the many difficulties clients face on their journey to sobriety—particularly the five listed below.

  3. Difficulty One: The Relapse Process It doesn’t occur immediately, and many who have drug addiction counselor certification understand the sometimes immediate occurrence of relapse. Frequently, minor obstacles can trigger the entire downfall of addiction recovery. Difficulty Two: Pink Cloud Syndrome Many drug addiction counselor requirements surround the practitioner’s ability to dispel “pink cloud syndrome,” wherein an individual facing early recovery finds the steps to be effortless. Unfortunately, psychological studies reveal the dangers in such thinking—as well as the counselor’s immense importance during it.

  4. Difficulty Three: A Lacking Social Network Frequently, an alcohol or drug addiction counselor will face difficulties due to a patient’s lacking social network. Years of addiction can isolate an individual, spawning social insecurities, anxiety, and depression—each of which may surface in a therapeutic environment. Difficulty Four: New Coping Strategies As an alcoholic recovers, they may turn to outpatient programs, fellowships or healthy practices. They may, however, develop dangerous coping strategies with unhealthy lifestyle choices. It’s your job to direct them towards wellbeing.

  5. Difficulty Five: A Focus on Motivation, Not Discipline Alcoholism requires incredible discipline to overcome. Unfortunately, many lack the motivation to stay sober. As a provider, it’ll be important to direct your patients to the cultivation of ongoing discipline, not motivation, to secure their future. While relapses are possible, they needn’t be a certainty. Work with your clients, engage them and create the groundwork for a healthy working relationship. You can create change, but it’ll take time.
