  3. Framing the Context: • The primary goal of the first read is for students to make meaning from text. • The secondary goal is for students to learn how to become metacognitive when reading. • This is done through Explicit Strategy Instruction.

  6. The Big Ideas For The Unit • Fossils offer a gateway to the past. • Fossils help us learn about life on earth long ago.

  7. Concept/ Question Board In the previous selection, we learned: • what fossils are • how fossils help us to understand what life was like long ago. • how fossils are formed

  9. Selection Vocabulary The purpose of the selection vocabulary is to teach students a strategy for figuring out the meaning of unknown words. • Word structure • Apposition • Context Clues • Cognates

  10. Explicit Strategy Instruction • Students make meaning from the text. • Students become metacognitive with strategy use. • This is done through a modeled read and think-aloud.

  11. Using Reading Strategies • Pre-identifies the strategies to be modeled. • The teacher names, defines, and models the strategies to be used and tells why good readers use these strategies. • Strategies are posted on the board for teacher to reference during the instructional period.

  13. Comprehension Strategies Asking Questions • Figuring out what part of the story you don’t understand. Visualizing • Imagining what is happening in the story.
