  1. Spravato Praised as Effective Treatment For Depression Esketamine is made from a drug called ketamine, an anesthetic that has also been used for many years to treat depression. But it wasn't until recently that esketamine, a more potent version of ketamine, gained FDA approval specifically for use as a nasal spray for people with treatment-resistant depression. Esketamine is derived from part of the ketamine molecule,” says Kaplin, who has studied the drug for three years. “Because it's more potent, you can use it at a lower dose and, theoretically, it has fewer side effects. Now that it's available in an intranasal version and approved by the FDA, insurance companies are more likely to cover the treatment. Spravato: a new and different way to treat depression For those suffering from debilitating treatment-resistant depression or major depressive disorder, a new treatment may bring new hope. 2. Mental Health is a leading psychiatric practice offering Spravato for the treatment of depression in Denver and Westminster, Colorado. While there are many treatments available, including therapy and medication, many people do not respond well to traditional treatments. Spravato is a drug specifically designed to treat depression and has been shown to be effective in many people. If you suffer from depression and have not found relief with other treatments, Spravato may be your best option. What is treatment resistant depression? TRD, or Treatment resistant depression (TRD), refers to a group of patients who have failed to respond to two or more antidepressants. If you've tried two or more antidepressants and still have problems with depressive symptoms, talk to your doctor to see if you may have refractory depression. Spravato for depression is a new type of treatment. It works differently than most other antidepressants and is covered by most major insurance. Health care providers may define the term "treatment-resistant depression" differently. Most insurance companies consider a patient to have TRD if they have tried two or more oral antidepressants of adequate doses and duration without significant recovery from the current depressive episode. How long does it take for esketamine to work? Esketamine reaches peak concentrations in the body within 20 to 40 minutes. It works much faster than traditional antidepressants and is preferred for use by someone experiencing a major depressive episode or even thoughts of self-harm. It also doesn't come with the side effects of traditional antidepressants, like sexual dysfunction or weight gain. SPRAVATO® Dosage for Treatment-Resistant Depression Once you and your healthcare provider have decided if this medication is right for you, and you understand the benefits and risks of SPRAVATO®, you are ready to begin treatment planning.

  3. It is taken with an oral antidepressant. ● You administer this nasal spray to yourself under the supervision of a healthcare provider at a SPRAVATO® Certified Treatment Center. ● This medicine is taken twice a week for the first four weeks. ● After the first four weeks, the drug is taken once a week for a month. ● After this, the medicine is usually taken once a week or once every two weeks. How do oral antidepressants work? The most commonly used oral antidepressants today are thought to treat depression by increasing levels of neurotransmitters (serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine) in areas of the brain that affect mood. Which indirectly helps increase neuroplasticity or the brain's ability to grow and heal. It is effective for treatment-resistant depression Up to 33% of people with depression do not respond to various types of conventional antidepressants. Esketamine reduced symptoms of depression in the majority of these people in clinical trials. The only other approved drug therapy for Clinical depression psychotherapy is a combination of olanzapine (an antipsychotic drug) and fluoxetine (a conventional antidepressant). However, this treatment has significant long-term effects including substantial weight gain, metabolic changes, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Does esketamine have side effects? People can experience a wide range of side effects from esketamine therapy. The most dramatic are hallucinations and feeling disconnected from oneself or from reality. However, side effects tend to peak within 40 minutes and subside within two hours of treatment.

  4. You can expect the most intense side effects during the first two treatments. Symptoms usually subside after that. Other side effects may include: ● Nausea ● Drowsiness ● Increased blood pressure ● feeling drunk ● Headache If you think treatment for depression isn't working, talk to your psychiatrist to see if esketamine therapy is an option for you. Who is a good candidate for esketamine therapy? Esketamine is currently approved for people with treatment-resistant depression. That means you've tried at least two other antidepressants (for at least six weeks each) and have experienced no remission or at least a 50% improvement in mood. For people who haven't had success with other antidepressants, esketamine gives them a chance to see what it's like to not have depression,” says Kaplin. “It gives them hope that they can feel better with the right treatment.
