During the early Victorian period, there was the Gothic Revival Movement, which inspired designs splashed with coloured enamel. Designs were based on animal themes, flowers and flamboyant metal work. As the era progressed into the mid Victorian period, these designs evolved into constituting of elaborately coloured metalwork and stonework. The designs were based on mosaics, seashells, fringes and rosettes. The late Victorian period triggered the use of diamond in the jewellery. This is when the trend of precious stones really caught on. The designs were unique, consisting mainly of birds, scarabs and such elements. They were intricately set in precious metals like gold and silver. Pearls also became popularized in jewellery during this time. With the progression of time, there was the Arts and Crafts Movement, which set the jewellery artists free to create unique designs. This was the time of silver jewellery set in brilliant colours and uncut stones. Then came the Art Nouveau time, when the French artist Rene Jules Lalique and the American artist Louis Comfort Tiffany came to the lead in making stylish jewellery. Their designs focussed more on the feminine delicateness which reflected in their jewellery. They were made without metal with transparent enamel that emphasized the femme qualities. The period of Edwardian jewellery then set in, with complicated designs comprised of motifs, ribbons, crescents and stars, little flowers and bows and the like. These designs were adored by women of that time, and this love has travelled through the decades and found home in the hearts of today’s women as well. The succeeding decades saw a more geometrical pattern in the jewellery that was designed, influenced by the Cubism movement. Precious and semi-precious stones were cut in the shape of pentagons and hexagons, and they adorned huge rings and made beautiful pendants. The retro period that set in after this consisted of a more patriotism-inspired designs. They were popular during the post-war period, but became obsolete after three- dimensional designs took over.
