  2. Farmer Henry had 17 horses. He would like to give his oldest son ½ of them, his middle son 1/3 of them and his youngest son 1/9 of them. How could he accomplish this?

  3. Simple! First, he borrows one horse from his neighbor--- There are now a total of 18 horses.

  4. He then gives ½ of them to his oldest son ½ x 18 = 9 Oldest son’s

  5. Next, he gives 1/3 of them to his middle son. 1/3 x 18 = 6 Oldest son’s Middle son’s

  6. Finally, he gives his youngest son 1/9 of the horses. 1/9 x 18 = 2 Oldest son’s Middle son’s Youngest son’s

  8. How Did Henry Do It? • It’s all in the math! • The 3 fractions never added to one whole • Instead--- 1 = 9 2 18 1 = 6 3 18 1 = 2 9 18 + 17/18
