BACKGROUND . In the past, foundation design for bridges was based on Allowable Stress Design. ASD utilized a global factor of safety that lumped all the uncertainty associated with the design into a single value. ASD design was based on:Factor of Safety = Resistance / LoadFS = R / Q = 2.5 to 3.0.
