  2. The Students Will (TSW) • TSW- learn the history and culture surrounding Pachamama • TSW- use the elements of art and design to create their own Pachamamas • TSW- understand symbolism used on Pachamama, then apply them to their own projects

  3. What is Pachamama? • Pachamama is a goddess revered by the indigenous people of the Andes. Pachamama is usually translated as "Mother Earth" but a more literal translation would be "Mother World"

  4. Mama Pacha or Pachamama is the most benevolent deity in parts of the Andean mountain range. • She is a fertility goddess who presides over planting and harvesting. She is also known for creating earthquakes.

  5. Influence from Other Religons • After conquest by Catholic Spain her image was masked by the Virgin Mary, behind whom she is invoked and worshiped in Indian rituals throughout the Andes. • It is not uncommon for native people to blend new religions in this case, Catholicism with their century old beliefs.

  6. Worship • Pachamama has a special worship day called "Martes de Challa" (Challa's Tuesday) where people bury food, throw candies, and burn incense. This is held on Shrove Tuesday, (the Tuesday preceding the beginning of Lent) another way Pachamama has merged with Catholicism.

  7. Hidden Pachamama • There are shrines dedicated to the Virgin Mother everywhere in the Andes, but in reality they’re shrines to Pachamama. Its a complicated mix; a little for the Virgin Mary and a lot for the Mama. The people leave little gifts of candy, flowers and notice the bottle of waters to replenish Mother Earth.
