  1. Destroying a Church Not even death itself can prevail against the church, and Christ’s mission for her (cf. Matthew 16:18). But, it is possible to destroy a local fellowship of Christians.

  2. Revelation 2:7 “Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place ̶ unless you repent.” Fellowship with Christ, (as a local congregation), can be broken

  3. 1 Corinthians 11:18 For first of all, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it. Unity in a local church can be disrupted.

  4. Revelation 3:16 “So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.” Effectiveness in work and worship can cease.

  5. Allowing Divisions over men to exist (1 Corinthians 1:10-13) Things That Destroy a Local Church

  6. 1 Corinthians 1:10-13 Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. 11 For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe's household, that there are contentions among you. 12 Now I say this, that each of you says, “I am of Paul,” or “I am of Apollos,” or “I am of Cephas,” or “I am of Christ.” 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?

  7. Allowing Divisions over men to exist (1 Corinthians 1:10-13) False Doctrines (2 Corinthians 11:2-4) Things That Destroy a Local Church

  8. 2 Corinthians 11:2-4 For I am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. 3 But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 4 For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted--you may well put up with it!

  9. Allowing Divisions over men to exist (1 Corinthians 1:10-13) False Doctrines (2 Corinthians 11:2-4) Binding Personal Conscience (Romans 14:1-4, 13) Things That Destroy a Local Church

  10. Romans 14:1-4, 13 (1-4), Receive one who is weak in the faith, but not to disputes over doubtful things. 2 For one believes he may eat all things, but he who is weak eats only vegetables. 3 Let not him who eats despise him who does not eat, and let not him who does not eat judge him who eats; for God has received him. 4 Who are you to judge another's servant? To his own master he stands or falls. Indeed, he will be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand. (13), Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather resolve this, not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother's way.

  11. Allowing Divisions over men to exist (1 Corinthians 1:10-13) False Doctrines (2 Corinthians 11:2-4) Binding Personal Conscience (Romans 14:1-4, 13) An Unfaithful Eldership (Acts 20:28-30) Things That Destroy a Local Church

  12. Acts 20:28-30 Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. 29 For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves.

  13. Allowing Divisions over men to exist (1 Corinthians 1:10-13) False Doctrines (2 Corinthians 11:2-4) Binding Personal Conscience (Romans 14:1-4, 13) An Unfaithful Eldership (Acts 20:28-30) Hypocrisy (Romans 2:21-24) Things That Destroy a Local Church

  14. Romans 2:21-24 You, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that a man should not steal, do you steal? 22 You who say, “Do not commit adultery,” do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? 23 You who make your boast in the law, do you dishonor God through breaking the law? 24 For “the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you,” as it is written.

  15. Allowing Divisions over men to exist (1 Corinthians 1:10-13) False Doctrines (2 Corinthians 11:2-4) Binding Personal Conscience (Romans 14:1-4, 13) An Unfaithful Eldership (Acts 20:28-30) Hypocrisy (Romans 2:21-24) The Infiltration of the World (1 Corinthians 5:6-8) Things That Destroy a Local Church

  16. 1 Corinthians 5:6-8 Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? 7 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. 8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

  17. Allowing Divisions over men to exist (1 Corinthians 1:10-13) False Doctrines (2 Corinthians 11:2-4) Binding Personal Conscience (Romans 14:1-4, 13) An Unfaithful Eldership (Acts 20:28-30) Hypocrisy (Romans 2:21-24) The Infiltration of the World (1 Corinthians 5:6-8) Itching Ears (2 Timothy 4:3-4) Things That Destroy a Local Church

  18. 2 Timothy 4:3-4 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.

  19. Allowing Divisions over men to exist (1 Corinthians 1:10-13) False Doctrines (2 Corinthians 11:2-4) Binding Personal Conscience (Romans 14:1-4, 13) An Unfaithful Eldership (Acts 20:28-30) Hypocrisy (Romans 2:21-24) The Infiltration of the World (1 Corinthians 5:6-8) Itching Ears (2 Timothy 4:3-4) Allowing Love for Christ to Become Secondary (Revelation 2:4-5) Things That Destroy a Local Church

  20. Revelation 2:4-5 [Church at Ephesus] Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. 5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place – unless you repent. cf. Matthew 10:37-39

  21. Matthew 10:37-39 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39 He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.

  22. Conclusion For our congregation to survive and be accepted by Christ we must be sound in doctrine, pure in life, loving to one another and diligent in service. May we all pledge to do our part!
