  1. The Coordinate Plane By: Christine Berg Edited By:VTHamilton

  2. Definition Coordinate Plane The plane formed when 2 perpendicular number lines intersect at their zero points

  3. Coordinate Plane The perpendicular number lines form a grid on the plane

  4. X-axis The horizontal number line • Positive to the right • Negative to the left

  5. Y-axis The vertical number line • Positive upward • Negative downward

  6. Origin Where the x and y axes intersect at their zero points

  7. Quadrants The x and y axes divide the coordinate plane into 4 parts called quadrants

  8. II I IV III

  9. Ordered Pair A pair of numbers (x , y) assigned to a point on the coordinate plane

  10. Ordered Pair X-coordinate (x , y) Y-coordinate

  11. Plotting a Point Step 1: Begin at the Origin

  12. Plotting a Point Step 2: Locate x on the x-axis

  13. Plotting a Point Step 3: Move up or down to the value of y

  14. Plotting a Point Step 4: Draw a dot and label the point

  15. In Your Own Words • What is a coordinate plane? • Define origin • How do you plot a point?
