  1. Humanism Renaissance Scholars wanted to recreate the spirit of classical arts, literature, and philosophy. Their concern with the classics was humanism

  2. Humanism • Humanist thought people had dignity, worth and the ability to achieve almost anything. • Humanist stressed that life on earth was meaningful, just as heaven and hell was.

  3. Humanism • Humanist focused on three ideas of the Greeks and Romans: • Individual Worth • Strong Commitment to public service • Development of Skills and Talents

  4. Individual Worth • People could improve themselves through study and reflection.

  5. Strong Commitment to Public Service • Wealthy families spent much of their money constructing public buildings. • These same wealthy families helped to support artists and writers so that all the citizens could enjoy artistic and literary works.

  6. Development of Skills and Talents • Humanist thought that people should be well-rounded in their knowledge.

  7. Humanism • There is no limit to what people could achieve. • Humanist never say can’t…..they always ask how?
